[Bug 858908] New: /etc/hostname vs. /etc/HOSTNAME confusion
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=858908 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=858908#c0 Summary: /etc/hostname vs. /etc/HOSTNAME confusion Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 13.1 Version: Final Platform: Other OS/Version: openSUSE 13.1 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: fcrozat@suse.com ReportedBy: suse-beta@cboltz.de QAContact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: Beta-Customer Blocker: --- Bug 803653 was about /etc/hostname vs. /etc/HOSTNAME on 12.3, and especially about hostnamectl's behaviour. This bugreport is a follow-up. The behaviour on 13.1 is interesting[tm]: After a fresh install, there's only /etc/HOSTNAME (owned by netcfg package), but no /etc/hostname: -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 13 21 nov 16:05 /etc/HOSTNAME When calling "hostnamectl set-hostname ein.host.name", the result is -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 14 14. Jan 20:49 /etc/hostname lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 13 14. Jan 20:49 /etc/HOSTNAME -> /etc/hostname This doesn't break anything, but is at least confusing. Can you please sort out what the correct filename is? ;-) Frederic, I'm assigning this to you (like the old bug) because the primary issue is in hostnamectl. If you think other parts (installation?) need to be changed, please reassign as needed. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

netcfg.rpm deserves an update related to this topic, too. Adding its bugowner into Cc
Sorry, which one? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Ok, /etc/HOSTNAME should be removed from netcfg, correct? For which distributions?
Yes, I think that it makes sense to keep only /etc/hostname there. YaST was patched for SLE12 and OpenSUSE:Factory. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

So netcfg should ship /etc/hostname?
in my POV yes -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
