[Bug 466198] New: DHCPD renewal causes syslog-ng reset even if host name has not changed
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=466198 Summary: DHCPD renewal causes syslog-ng reset even if host name has not changed Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: RC 2 Platform: All OS/Version: openSUSE 11.1 Status: NEW Severity: Minor Priority: P5 - None Component: Network AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: kkatzke@tamu.edu QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.0.5) Gecko/2008121300 SUSE/3.0.5-0.1 Firefox/3.0.5 When DHCPD renews it's lease, there is the potential for a different hostname to be assigned by the DHCP server. However, even if that potential is disabled in the network configuration, the /etc/sysconfig/network/scripts/dhcpcd-hook script will still cause syslog to reload, which causes it to reload it's configuration. In many cases, this reload is unexpected to an administrator or user, and could cause downtime or the loss of log messages if the /etc/syslog-ng/syslog-ng.conf or other configuration is in an unstable state. Unnecessary reloading (especially with a short lease time) consumes resources on the host and generates unnecessary network traffic when streaming the logs over the network. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Set the DHCPD timeout to a low value in /etc/sysconfig/network/dhcp ; make sure that Network Settings -> Hostname/DNS -> Change Hostname via DHCP option is off 2. `/sbin/service network restart` 3. `tail -f /var/log/messages`; watch as every time DHCP reloads, these messages are printed: Jan 14 14:50:34 myhost syslog-ng[2918]: Configuration reload request received, reloading configuration; Jan 14 14:50:34 myhost syslog-ng[2918]: New configuration initialized; Actual Results: Syslog reloaded every time the DHCP lease was renewed, even though the "change hostname via DHCP" option was turned off in the configuration. Expected Results: Syslog should not be reloaded if "change hostname via dhcp" option is disabled to prevent un-necessary log traffic, resource usage, and network traffic. The culprit is /etc/sysconfig/network/scripts/dhcpcd-hook -- see line 125 and 147. In the short term, if this feature isn't requested/required, the lines can be commented out. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
