[Bug 484573] New: NVIDIA driver makes KDE4 unusable after latest kernel update
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=484573 Summary: NVIDIA driver makes KDE4 unusable after latest kernel update Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.1 Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: luiz-lange@yahoo.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Created an attachment (id=278970) --> (https://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=278970) This is the only log with indication of the "nvidia" driver being loaded, so I assume it is the correct one, but it may be from. Right now I have User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.0.6) Gecko/2009012700 SUSE/3.0.6-0.1.2 Firefox/3.0.6 I have by mistake entered this bug in the general forum: http://forums.opensuse.org/hardware/409693-hp-pavilion-dv6840el-latest-updat... Also, please see my comments as Mar Aberto here: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=181697 Whenever I have the NVIDIA driver installed, the only way I can use the laptop is with IceWM. Again, I have OpenSuse 11.1 on an HP Pavilion dv6840el. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.install NVIDIA driver from NVIDIA repository. 2. login to KDE 4 Actual Results: At second login, the mouse pointer is visible, but the screen is like a hand-quilted blanket, with squares all over the screen that are fragments of the previously used softwares/windows. It is like a nightmare of bad memories... I have to hit the power button in order to log off, and then get in again only with IceWM (so I can remove the nvidia driver again). Expected Results: Before the latest kernel update, the NVIDIA driver was working just fine, including double monitors through HDMi cable, OpenGL screensavers and games (mostly), etc. I expected the updated kernel + driver to have performed the same at least, if not better. I wanted to add the correct x11 log file, but right now the NVIDIA driver is not installed, so I'll have to append it later, if it is possible. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The only difference between xorg logs is line 15 date and time. There is nothing unusual to see in logs. Xorg seems to load fine. Do you have any errors in .xsession-errors ? When KDE session fails, don't log in IceWM, because .xsession-errors from KDE will be overwritten. From command line save file then log in GUI. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Plasma works fine and it has more features. You have 4.1.3. You have few options to narrow down, or solve problem: 1) create test user and see is it better; 2) stop plasma, move 2 plasma configuration files out of ~/.kde4/share/config/ directory, start plasma again (above); 2) update KDE from 4.1.3 to 4.2.1. (I did that in 2 last installations). Last time I used 1-click install link for 11.1 from http://en.opensuse.org/KDE4 in section KDE Factory. I'll change component from Kernel to KDE4 Workspace, so that KDE team get it on radar and decide what to do. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
