https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=732279 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=732279#c0 Summary: KNetworkManager can't start connection Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.3 Version: Final Platform: i586 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.3 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Update Problems AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: bugzilla@singvogel.com QAContact: jsrain@suse.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; de-DE; rv:1.9.2.24) Gecko/20111103 Firefox/3.6.24 ( .NET CLR 3.5.30729; .NET4.0E) After the update from 2011-11-22 (new NetworkManager packages), I cannot start any connections by KNetworkManager anymore. The icon appears in the system tray, I can click on it and see all the avail devices. But I can't connect to the internet, as clicking on any connection doesn't activate it. This issue is present for my WiFi connection as for my UMTS modem connetion. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Start KNetworkManager 2. Click on icon in system tray 3. Choose a connection and click on it Actual Results: There is no activation visible in the KNetworkManager icon, nor in the connection type list. Expected Results: The icon should change to a unplugged connection and later to a plugged one. I don't know how to connect to the internet at the moment, as both connection types of the PC doesnt work anymore. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

After testing the new NetworkManager packages I have found a new problem. It appears that after the proposed packages are updated the latest available patches via YaST that offer updated NetworkManager-kde4 corrupt knetworkmanager and it doesn't start at all. Running from shell I get this error: $ knetworkmanager & knetworkmanager: error while loading shared libraries: libknm_nm.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
This means libknm_nm.so was renamed or removed, and it belongs to NetworkManager-kde4-libs. NetworkManager doesn't touch the file and the patch doesn't change any API, so NM is unlikely to break the file.
So I guess in order to use this latest patched version of NetworkManager you will need to provide a patched version of NetworkManager-kde4 as well.
I temporarily fixed problem by reverting to older release of NetworkManager-kde4 package (NetworkManager-kde4-0.9.svn1057339-4.1.x86_64.rpm and NetworkManager-kde4-libs-0.9.svn1057339-4.1.x86_64.rpm)
Hope this helps. I updated NetworkManager-kde4* and NetworkManager-*-kde4 (0.9.svn1057339-5.3.1) from the official update repo, and knetworkmanager still works. Could you update NetworkManager-kde4 again and show the result of `ls -l /usr/lib/libknm_nm.so` or `ls -l /usr/lib64/libknm_nm.so`?

Reading installed packages... Resolving package dependencies... The following NEW patch is going to be installed: NetworkManager-kde4 The following packages are going to be REMOVED: NetworkManager-kde4 NetworkManager-kde4-libs 2 packages to remove. After the operation, 1.8 MiB will be freed. Continue? [y/n/?] y Removing NetworkManager-kde4-0.9.svn1057339-4.1 [done] Removing NetworkManager-kde4-libs-0.9.svn1057339-4.1 [done] Now I do as you suggested: $ ls -l /usr/lib64/libknm_nm.so ls: cannot access /usr/lib64/libknm_nm.so: No such file or directory $ ls -l /usr/lib/libknm_nm.so ls: cannot access /usr/lib/libknm_nm.so: No such file or directory So it the update actually removed NetworkManager-kde4-libs and it renders the system's networking unusable in KDE. I fixed it temporarily again by doing forced downgrades of NetworkMAnager-kde4 and NetworkManager-kde4-libs (which provides missing libknm_nm.so shared library).
