[Bug 231855] New: No color in rxvt-unicode
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=231855 Summary: No color in rxvt-unicode Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: Other OS/Version: SuSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: X11 Applications AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: Joseph.Comfort@asu.edu QAContact: sndirsch@novell.com The rxvt application installed with color listings of directories and man pages as default. It was very nice! Now, rxvt-unicode (urxvt) is, properly, the application. But it lacks color. The resolution is simple: 1) add a line 'TERM rxvt-unicode' to the /etc/DIR_COLORS file. That will enable color in directory listings. 2) add the lines 'Rxvt*colorBD: red' and 'Rxvt*colorUL: blue' (or suitable equivalent) either to UXTerm application default file or to the /etc/X11/Xresources file (and/or any other similar files). These lines were in the Rxvt application file of the 10.1 distribution, but the file is absent in 10.2. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

I don't care one way or the other, you can make the default as you like. I attach a screen shot here to show the difference between using these colours or not. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=231855 ------- Comment #8 from mrueckert@novell.com 2007-02-15 05:12 MST ------- as maintainer of the urxvt package i reject this request. if you would like to have it that way, you can still use ~/.Xdefaults. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=231855 ------- Comment #9 from Joseph.Comfort@asu.edu 2007-02-15 11:47 MST ------- In regard to comment #7, the bottom figure is incredibly nice compared to the dull upper figure. Thanks for showing it. For #8, as a minimum, rxvt-unicode should be added to /etc/DIR_COLORS, if it hasn't been already. I am using .Xdefaults. My comments were motivated by (1) trying to get urxvt to behave like the nice rxvt and restore a lost feature, and (2) helpful recommendation so that older rxvt users (or just new users who are unfamiliar with .Xdefaults) would not have to go through the frustation and effort I did. For years, SuSE provided a little extra class to its istribution, bringing smiles to people as was the case when I first saw colors (automatically) in rxvt. It seemed like a nice advance in computer technology and beneficial to users. I can make urxvt work the way I want, but why should others be held back? Unless there is a strong reason for keeping the old monochrome, I do not understand the "I reject" comment. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=231855 ------- Comment #10 from mrueckert@novell.com 2007-02-15 12:14 MST ------- i dont like the extra colors in the case of bold and underlined. As urxvt upstream didnt keep the settings from rxvt, i wont change that for suse now. What are the advantages of making bold red and underlined blue? How do you differ bold red and bold blue text from just "bold" later on? I personally prefer to keep those seperated. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=231855 ------- Comment #11 from mrueckert@novell.com 2007-02-15 12:16 MST ------- how about having the old rxvt defaults as comments in the config and a README.SuSE that explains how to restore the rxvt behavior? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=231855 ------- Comment #12 from Joseph.Comfort@asu.edu 2007-02-15 12:41 MST ------- The colors really help visually to see the different things. Black bold sort of works, but underline does not stand out very well. I just think using color in today's world guides the eye more quickly and overall works better. It's a mystery to me why urxvt didn't keep the rxvt settings, as the evolution would have been natural. Your suggestion in #11 can suitably accomplish what is needed, if that is how SuSE would like to go. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=231855 ------- Comment #13 from mfabian@novell.com 2007-04-02 10:10 MST ------- Joseph Comfort> urxvt didn't keep the rxvt settings, as the evolution would have been Joseph Comfort> natural. These colour settings were a special feature of the rxvt rpm in SuSE Linux. As far as I know, it was never the default upstream. Personally I like the colours for bold and underline, but that is really a matter of taste. And as far as I know, no other terminal makes this default either. Many terminals don't even have such a feature. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=231855 ------- Comment #14 from dickey@his.com 2007-04-02 15:15 MST ------- Perhaps no other terminal in SuSE. Redhat has patched xterm's resources for quite a while to turn it on. The feature has been in xterm since mid-1996. Not all users like it - I see more people wanting to turn it off than to turn it on. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
