[Bug 981346] New: laptop display blinks/flickers with kernel 4.6
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=981346 Bug ID: 981346 Summary: laptop display blinks/flickers with kernel 4.6 Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Tumbleweed Version: Current Hardware: Other OS: SUSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel Assignee: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com Reporter: suse-beta@cboltz.de QA Contact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: Beta-Customer Blocker: --- I'm using the kernel from Kernel:Stable (actually with two small AppArmor patches on top) so I already got kernel 4.6 instead of the 4.5.4 kernel in Tumbleweed. I'm using a laptop with intel graphics and two screens (laptop display + external screen via HDMI). Kernel 4.6 causes the laptop screen to blink / flicker as soon as X starts (both login manager and in KDE) which makes the laptop display unusable and hurts in the eyes. I can "fix" this by booting 4.5.4, so this is clearly a regression in 4.6. I'll happily provide logs etc. - just tell me what you need ;-) -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Then check the following: - Whether this happens without HDMI connection
Yes, it also happens without an external display. Therefore I continued testing without the external display to simplify the setup.
- Whether this happens with bare X, i.e. boot in runlevel 3, then start X manually as root like "X -retro"
Yes, bare X also blinks. The difference is that it goes dark for longer, and only flashes every 5 seconds. Another interesting detail is that moving the mouse keeps the display in the expected state (no blinking). -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Could be related to the fact that 4.6 has the new intel PSR (Panel Self-Refresh) mode enabled with Kernel 4.6 ?
Yes, the result in comment 7 obviously shows it. (In reply to Robby Engelmann from comment #11)
it seems to be dependent on the hardware...for skylake 4.6 make life easier: https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=980124
Right, the flickering issue really depends on the hardware. Even the behavior is different per model even with the same chip. For SKL, 4.6 is a better choice that finally addresses many pending issues. PSR has been already enabled for SKL from earlier kernels, but it's been disabled for other old chips until 4.6. Now it's re-enabled with a hope that the recent development covers all corner cases. Alas, it doesn't, hence this has to be tracked by upstream. So, as usual, two steps forward, one step back (or vice versa :) -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
