[Bug 271712] New: Kernel 2.6.21 RC7 is newer then 2.6.21-3 (release)
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=271712 Summary: Kernel 2.6.21 RC7 is newer then 2.6.21-3 (release) Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Alpha 3plus Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 10.3 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Update Problems AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: ihudak@usoftinc.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com When updating OpenSuSE 10.3 Alpha3plus from kernel 2.6.21_rc7 (or 2.6.21_rc5) to 2.6.21-3 YaST considers RCs to be newer then release. I think this is because of '-' instead of '_' after '21' in the version string. After kernel is updated manually to 2.6.21-3 YaST displays kernel-default and kernel-sources packages in blue (as the packages those have newer versions). The newer versions are 2.6.21_rc5 from Alpha3 DVD. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

I tried to change the kernel-default-2.6.21-3.x86_64.rpm package name to kernel-default-2.6.21_3.x86_64.rpm and then to kernel-default-2.6.21_sc5_git13-2.x86_64.rpm (kernel-default-2.6.21_rc5_git13-2.x86_64.rpm is the rc5), but yast offered me rc_5 as the newer one in both cases. Their build dates are correct (2.6.21-3 is newer). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

The bug status is unclear because it hasn't been said how this had happened. Online Update? YaST System Update? Update via booting from CD/DVD? Adding a new source and using Software Installation module? 2.) I'm not responsible for ZYPP and evaluating which package is newer It seems YaST logs are actually needed. So if such version strings are OK, then this needs to be dealt with in libzypp. Michael, you will know better. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

But it would be newer than "3" as well. If a string and a number are to be compared, the string is newer. "2.6.21 - rc7" > "2.6.21 - 3" Neither rpm nor libzypp will apply any semantic to any character sequence that occurs in a version string. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

how about Release: rc1.0
That would work; even only incrementing the trailing numeric part without requiring a specific separator would do. We have the release number synchronization hack via kernel-dummy though; I don't think we can override the release number that kernel-dummy uses at the moment. Rudi, any ideas for that perhaps? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
