[Bug 263883] New: Installation in VMware-Server fails
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=263883 Summary: Installation in VMware-Server fails Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Alpha 3 Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: rhafer@novell.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com I just tried to install 10.3-alpha3 in a VMWare-Server VM. It failed with an error message that no harddrive was found for Installation. The german error message is: "Es wurden keine Festplatten für die Installation gefunden. Bitte prüfen Sie Ihre Hardware." Of course there is a virtual Harddisk configured in VMWare. I had already an openSUSE 10.2 installed there. I'll attach some logfiles that might help to debug the problem. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

yes, that seems to work, where this a bug lies ? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=263883 ------- Comment #6 from rccj@ricreig.com 2007-04-13 16:03 MST ------- Alpha 1 and 2 did NOT exhibit this bug. This is new for Alpha 3. I downloaded (using Ktorrent) the Alpha 3 release and burned a DVD on a running VMWare Alpha 2 machine and rebooted the server and with the intent to select 'update', however the installation software reported no drives found. Rebooting (under VMWare Server) to the existing Alpha 2 installation verified the DVD as correct and had no problem with any of the disk diagnostics on the virtual drives. Conclusion: Alpha 3 installation has a problem detecting the SCSCI drives. I did create a virtual IDE drive which WAS detected but the SCSCI drives remained undetected. I cannot therefore test Alpha 3 using VMWare which has never before failed with any version of SUSE or any other Linux or Windows OS previously. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Or you can patch your kernel with this patch I posted some time ago: http://www.gossamer-threads.com/lists/linux/kernel/748285 I'm not sure whether this patch does not have any negative interactions with real (especially fibre-channel) MPT adapters, so I do not think that it is acceptable for stock kernel (there must have been some reason why old code used 16, while new code asks adapter how many targets are there). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

I think it does not. I had to change from the LSI SCSI emulation in VMWare to the BusLogic emulation to get it to work. I did a Custom install when setting up the VMware machine and selected the alternate SCSI driver. Of course, IDE also works. But not LSI. It worked in openSUSE 10.3, but not 11.0 and 11.1 (all final releases). The host is openSUSE 10.0. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Problem here is VMWare LSI emulation, which is broken. Or, rather, which has been broken but since has been fixed up. So please update your VMWare installation, that will fix it. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
