[Bug 462604] New: SATA devices not detected on NVidia GeForce 8200 MCP78S motherboard
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=462604 Summary: SATA devices not detected on NVidia GeForce 8200 MCP78S motherboard Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.1 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: linux-clusters@mindspring.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: Community User Created an attachment (id=262481) --> (https://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=262481) lspci output from NVidia GeForce 8200 motherboard Installing OpenSuSE 11.1 from released downloaded DVD does not find any SATA devices attached to onboard NVidia MCP78S controller. This is a NVidia GeForce 8200 based motherboard and the standard OpenSuSE 11.1 2.26.27.7-9-default kernel does not seem to have support for the SATA controller on this motherboard. It is possible to go into the motherboard BIOS and change the SATA mode from SATA to AHCI and back but I have tried both settings and the SATA controller never seems to be found. No hard drives attached to the on-board SATA ports are discovered. The listing from lspci is attached. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I have tried setting the SATA mode selection in the BIOS to AHCI and loading the AHCI module as well as changing the SATA mode selection in BIOS to SATA rather than AHCI and loading the sata_nv kernel module. Neither produces any results. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Anyway, if this information is of any help for this bug, installing 11.1 on my board went without problems as long as AHCI wasn't used. Then I have realized that it's off. I have turned it on in BIOS and then the only thing that is displayed is a "GRUB _" message with a blinking cursor. That's it. I have tried reinstalling with the AHCI mode on, and the install goes well, the SATA hdd is detected, ahci kernel module is loaded, even the reboot for Automatic configuration works. But when all is finished, at first reboot, there's the "GRUB _" thing again. My board is AsRock K10N78FullHD-hSLI R3.0 http://www.asrock.com/mb/overview.asp?Model=K10N78FullHD-hSLI%20R3.0&s=AM2%2b I have opened bug 483036 for my problem -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

There was a update which should have fixed the problem. Silvju, GRUB failing to load is a different issue. It could be that somehow OS device -> BIOS device mapping is broken but I'm no GRUB expert. It'll be best to track it in its own bug report.
