You have to be root to mount/dismount the drive and there is no "eject" function to power down the drive for removal. I've tested it with two different eSATA express cards and in both cases it prints 'sata' and not sata_ext. Not sure if the hardware is the reason or if there is a problem with the patch. I doubt many motherboard vendors actually mark their external ports as external. They're much more likely to just diddle with the driver they ship on their pretty CDs. An external card. I frankly don't know how to proceed here. SATA ports, e or not, don't differ logically. The only thing which makes external ports external is having different kind of connector at externally accessible position. For on-board ports, the motherboard or laptop manufacturer knows which ports are facing outside and set the ahci controller bits accordingly to tell the OS that those ports are external, but if you put in an add-on card, unless the add-on card has such markings (BTW 3124/32 doesn't have any such mechanism) there's no way to tell whether it's facing inside or outside and they can't be whitelisted as they're not fixed. It's kind of pointless to push the patch when there's no known case of using it. Given the scarce or non-existent use of the specific ahci feature and machines which don't use ahci, I think it would be easier and much more complete to mark eSATA ports from hal by matching DMI data, PCI devfn and port number. If that can be arranged, I'll be happy to collect the data on the linux ata wiki page.
