[Bug 279837] New: grub cannot write boot record (Promise Technology, Inc. PDC20319 (FastTrak S150 TX4) (rev 02))
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=279837 Summary: grub cannot write boot record (Promise Technology, Inc. PDC20319 (FastTrak S150 TX4) (rev 02)) Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Alpha 4 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: Winfrid.Tschiedel@fujitsu-siemens.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com CC: daniel.rahn@novell.com If you are using a system with a FastTrak S150 TX4 controller, you have to define even for a single disk a RAID0. If you are installing on this system fedora (6 or higher) or rhel 5 in all cases a new partition table has to be created and you will get partitions like /dev/mapper/pdc_bjfeeibeeb.... If you wish to install openSUSE on such a disk, everything will work except, there is no boot-record written. Same happens on other systems, when dm-raid is used to use a RAID. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=279837 ------- Comment #4 from Winfrid.Tschiedel@fujitsu-siemens.com 2007-06-14 07:53 MST ------- Update for openSUSE 10.3 Alpha5 : With the new release I see additional problems - I wanted to overwrite my previous openSUSE 10.3 Alpha4 installation ( and keep the other distributions ) : 1 ) first try with reformatting the partions - installation starts, but fails formatting the partition system code : -3030 2 ) second try - deleting just the data in the partition and start a new installation without format - this does not work, because the installer does not see the correct format of the partition - you see just DM RAID 3 ) third try - deleting the partition and allocation of a new root partition, same as 1) installation starts, but fails formatting the partition system code : -3030 summary - currently I am failing to install openSUSE 10.3 Alpha5 together with rhel5/fedora on a system with FastTrek S150 TX4 controller. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Today I tried SLES 11 Alpha1 - Basically the same problems as on openSUSE 11.1 Alpha1, but system cannot be rebooted after installation - the bootprocess is aborted with "invalid rootpartition". Winfrid
Just an addon - the message invalid root partition is caused by the actual SLES 11 kernel - in a quick and dirty way I copied the openSUSE 11.1 kernel to SLES 11, with this kernel the system was bootable and I could continue with the second part of the installation. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
