[Bug 279837] New: grub cannot write boot record (Promise Technology, Inc. PDC20319 (FastTrak S150 TX4) (rev 02))
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=279837 Summary: grub cannot write boot record (Promise Technology, Inc. PDC20319 (FastTrak S150 TX4) (rev 02)) Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Alpha 4 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: Winfrid.Tschiedel@fujitsu-siemens.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com CC: daniel.rahn@novell.com If you are using a system with a FastTrak S150 TX4 controller, you have to define even for a single disk a RAID0. If you are installing on this system fedora (6 or higher) or rhel 5 in all cases a new partition table has to be created and you will get partitions like /dev/mapper/pdc_bjfeeibeeb.... If you wish to install openSUSE on such a disk, everything will work except, there is no boot-record written. Same happens on other systems, when dm-raid is used to use a RAID. Alpha-6 just 'ate' my 10.3a5 system that I had added a MD5 1TB software raid to. When GRUB wrote the partition table/FSTAB, it wiped it clean. I ended up reinstalling 10.3a5 after removing the 4 disk Raid set which fortunately were revivable. I also revived my /home which was on a separate drive but I spent many hours finding RPMs that had libraries that restored XMMS, XINE, Video Lan, Media Player and others that I had imported from 10.2 but which aren't properly supported yet in 10.3aX. So we should now concentrate on the problem - grub should be able to write a bootrecord to a partition to support multiboot via chainloader. http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Install_Gentoo_with_NVRAID_using_dmraid 6.5.1 Installing grub Method 1 describes how to write a bootrecord other than MBR. This method works e.g. for ubuntu and redhat base distributions, but it fails in case of openSUSE ( 279837#7 ). Which is the correct way to install a bootrecord to dmraid controlled diskconfiguartion on NOVELL ? Please keep in mind, that some SATA RAID contollers support only RAID disks. Just a note, none of the distributions was able to write during installation a bootrecord to a partition, all the time an MBR was written, but one could fix the problem later with the above described method. At RedHat I have opened an entry for this problem : https://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=225551 I hope this helps. Just an addon - the message invalid root partition is caused by the actual SLES 11 kernel - in a quick and dirty way I copied the openSUSE 11.1 kernel to SLES 11, with this kernel the system was bootable and I could continue with the second part of the installation. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
