[Bug 419550] New: Grub fails to install (64bit, RAID6, GPT / GUID partition table)
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=419550 Summary: Grub fails to install (64bit, RAID6, GPT / GUID partition table) Product: openSUSE 11.0 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.0 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: t-o-m@gmx.net QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: Community User As I tried to install openSUSE11-x86-64bit on my server, the installation routine could not install grub. The message is: "GNU GRUB version 0.97 (640k lower / 3072K upper memory) [ Minimal BASH-like line editing ... <snip> ... of a device/filename. ] grub> setup --stage2=/boot/grub/stage2 (hd0,0) (hd0,0) Error 17: Cannot mount selected partition grub> quit"<<< My system: - Motherboard ASUS P5BP-E/4L - CPU Intel Core Quad 6600 - RAM 2x2GB ECC - Raid controller 3Ware 9650SE-8LPML PCIe 4x - Harddisks 8x 1TB Seagate 7200.11, bundled to a 8TB-RAID6 array - Partitions: a. sda 5,4 TB (net) RAID6 b. sda1 /boot Ext3 100 MB c. sda2 /swap swap 8 GB d. sda3 / Ext3 10 GB e. sda4 /var Ext3 2 GB f. sda5 /files XFS 5,44 TB as you see, there is no extended partition, but they are all primaries.. Thus, instead of MBR a GPT partition table is installed. I assume that the bug lays in the GPT area.. Hello Cyril! Unfortunately I have no y2logs, since I deleted this installation right after. But as I found a workarround in the mean time, I think I know where the problem is located. Here is the work arround: 1. Install openSUSE 11 with the option to install grub on /boot, but NOT the bootloader anywhere. Installation completes without any errors, and System starts as usual into runlevel 5. 2. Reboot the system with "SystemRescueCD 1.0.x" or newer which is found at www.sysresccd.org. This CD comes with a patched version of GRUB legacy (0.97), which supports GPT disklabels. 3. Copy the grub files of this CD to /boot (but keep the existing menu.lst) 4. Tell Grub to use /boot as it's root 5. Install the bootloader with GRUB Finished- now the /boot partition has the patched grub files from the CD and a bootloader so that the system is ready to boot as usual. CONCLUSION: The only problem is, that the GRUB version shipped with openSUSE 11 is a version, that is NOT capable of handling GPT disklabels, but only the 20-year old and obsolete MBR. But only GPT-labeled disks are capable of adressing disks or partitions larger then 2 Terrabyte. Since I have a RAID with 12 disks 1 TB each, and the RAID controller exports this array as a 12 Terrabyte harddisk to the system, I am forced to use GPT! SUGGESTION: Can't you issue a patched version of GRUB 0.97 and distribute it via YAST-online-update (YOU) to us? It will be in the final 11.1, likely one of the next betas. You should be able to use that package. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
