Didn't see this issue with "modesetting", though that instead suffers from severe tearing, including diagonal tearing. So now I'm using the proprietary driver, which doesn't suffer from either issue, and also doesn't experience https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1214987.

Ok With nouveau driver involved I suggest to close this as WONTFIX. And it seems you're now happy with the proprietary driver.
