Everything was fine until 'apper' found an update 'opensuse-2013-66' which updated 'packagekit' to (0.8.7-4.4.1). Subsequently, 'apper (0.7.2-6.2)' now fails with a segmentation fault every time it starts. I reverted 'packagekit' back to (0.7.4-2.9.1) and it works now. Looks like 'apper' needs to be updated at the same time as 'packagekit'? I could not find any update for apper.
