[Bug 963496] New: On HP Netbook: Original SuSE installation DVD and Life USB not recognized, efi files don't work
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=963496 Bug ID: 963496 Summary: On HP Netbook: Original SuSE installation DVD and Life USB not recognized, efi files don't work Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Distribution Version: Leap 42.1 Hardware: HP OS: openSUSE 42.1 Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Live Medium Assignee: coolo@suse.com Reporter: ralf.hoppe@bluewin.ch QA Contact: coolo@suse.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:43.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/43.0 Build Identifier: HP Netbook Pavilion x2 10-N210NZ Product K3F17EA with BIOS: InsydeH20 Rev. 5.0 Start Installation from original open SUSE DVD fails, DVD not recognized. Iso file downloaded and written to USB-stick with imagewriter, Stick not recognized. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Connect external DVD player or USB-stick to computer 2. Switch on computer 3. Preinstalled software is loaded or after emptying the HDD: failure report: basic system is missing 1a. Connect external DVD player or USB-stick to computer 2a. Switch on computer and start boot options 3a. No USB shown Actual Results: No change in behaviour Same failure with openSUSE 13.1 and with openSUSE tumbleweed Same failure when writing iso-image with Linux 'imagewriter', windows 'rufus' or other programms Expected Results: Showing installation window Starting installation of Leap 42.1 The following iso-Images work. - gpated - parted magic Both are recognized and may be started. With gparted I cleaned the HDD completely from all windows and HP-software last trial: 1. I copied the 'bootia32.efi' and 'bootx64.efi' into EFI/boot and replaced the original SUSE efi-file 2. The sick was recognized directly and the installation window of Leap 42.1 was shown 3. Due to the completely different file sructure installation process could be started but directly showed various files not found (like linuxefi, initrdefi) To fix the bug, the efi-files of openSUSE iso should be adapted to those of gparted or parted magic. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

*** Bug 963600 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. ***
I had installed Leap and was able to start it by using the 3rd party EFI grub2 module. By installing grub2-i386-efi from https://build.opensuse.org/package/show?project=home%3AWarhammer40k%3Astuff&package=grub2 and rerunning "grub2-install --target=i386", the required 32bit EFI loader was successfully created and I could boot Leap via Leap's grub2 setup. So in addition to extending the boot image, an according grub2-i386-efi package is needed during installation of Leap. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

Finally I can boot Leap using the following: [...]
I'm a bit surprised to see you have that much difficulties: My experience is much less troublesome: - add 32bit EFI grub to Leap boot stick - boot from stick, manually load installer via grub commands (similar to what you described) - upon reboot (again from stick), manually load installed environment via grub commands - install grub2-i386-efi-2.02~beta2-55.1.i586.rpm, ignoring dependencies - re-run grub2 install specifying 32bit target ("grub2-install --target=i386-efi --recheck") - done grub2-install will add the 32bit loader to the EFI environment. I'm in the process of preparing an article on this - but as it's focus is on machine-specific difficulties (mixed-mode EFI is just one of these), it may take some more days until I'm ready to publish... -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

I'm a bit surprised to see you have that much difficulties:
I installed Leap with defaults, and it was a mistake, debian grub do not read btrfs (at least without his modules, and there is not enough room for them). I had to build my own stick with openSUSE 32 bits grub
