[Bug 247680] New: Desktop Selection could be betted delt with in 10.2 Manual and Must be improved in further releases
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=247680 Summary: Desktop Selection could be betted delt with in 10.2 Manual and Must be improved in further releases Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: i386 OS/Version: SuSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Documentation AssignedTo: rwalter@novell.com ReportedBy: alpha096@tpg.com.au QAContact: ke@novell.com During the beginning of the install program as described in the 10.2 commencing with page 13 installation made if Update is selected the user is not presented with the ability to change the partition settings of the existing system. There needs to by some flow chart to describe the require steps in the very different modes. In particular one of the most significant decisions, that is NOT easily changed after the user has committed is the choice of desktop. On page 14 there needs to have an obvious reference to page V111 - Additional Documentation. I assume most new users will probably have access to their Kept \Windoze partition OR have access to their old Open Suse Installation. If and only IF their is enough space on the CD/DVD set can we make tis small but massively huge decisions easier for the new or updating user by placing both the .PDF files found at HTTP://www.novell.documentation/opensuse10x on the installation disks and to introduct the concept of the 2 desktops well before the Linux kernel and installation process detects the presence of a currently installed other O/S. I would also suggest that one of the default bookmarks loaded by default in FF be this same URL. Desktop selection remains the singularly greatest decision of a new user and an update user likes to know whats new. If you can, if the installation script detects both a pre-configed Windoze installation OR detect a network connection and start a small browser with the URL above appear that would be Micky Mouse. Either way desktop selection is a very important for the user and desperately needs to be made more predominant and details more accessible about the differences. The amount of time I have seen the question "How do I change Desktop", I now know I don't want the one I first selected and transfer all the data......? in the email chat discussion is endless - particularly when this is their first tie using OpenSuse. Before the next release please treat users to a great deal of information regarding desktop well before the new user tosses a coin. I classify this as a documentation bug as currently we have, as regular users, perhaps lost site of the we expect the non or first time Linux to understand the massive implication of the desktop selection. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

We usually aim to put the doc PDFs on the installation media, too - for 10.2 we could not provide them on *all* media (as far as I remember) - please see the Release Notes for 10.2 for details (second issue, "Availability of Manuals"): http://www.suse.com/relnotes/i386/openSUSE/10.2/RELEASE-NOTES.en.html I think it would be a good idea if we could generally add the doc web site for the product (www.novell.com/documentation/opensuse-versionX) to the default bookmarks in the browser (so that they appear in the SUSE Linux folder as do the support and download pages etc.) - Michael, how do you feel about this? With the pattern view in the package manager it is very comfortable to change the desktop selection at any time - Karl, could you please add some sentences about how to do so in the "Installing and Removing Software" for next release so this information is more prominent in the Start-Up Guide? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=247680 ------- Comment #6 from alpha096@tpg.com.au 2007-03-05 10:12 MST ------- Attn Tanja. Ref default bookmarks in version 10.1 - These are NOT maintained in an update version of 10.2. A new installation of 10.2 yield ONLY the following default bookmarks under 1 of three default bookmarks. The default bookmark is Titled open SUSE and has the following references. http://www.opensuse.org/ http://www.novell.com/support/browse.do?WidgetName=BROWSE_PRODUCT&BROWSE_PRODUCT.TaxoName=SG_SupportGoals&NodeType=leaf&NodeName=openSUSE&TaxoName=SG_SupportGoals&BROWSE_PRODUCT.isProductTaxonomy=true&BROWSE_PRODUCT.NodeId=SG_SUSELINUX_1_1&BROWSE_PRODUCT.NodeType=leaf&BROWSE_PRODUCT.thisPageUrl=%2Fproduct%2Fproducts.do&NodeId=SG_SUSELINUX_1_1&id=m1&AppContext=AC_SiteCentral http://www.novell.com/coolsolutions/slp/ http://www.novell.com/linux/ http://en.opensuse.org/Released_Version. With respect to comment #5. I trust the manual includes more than a 'link' a URL that the user has not access to via printed material. I trust this is an expression of verbose text. not only in swapping or making additions to the 'first choice desktop' but moreover attempts to explain to a New User the concept and default following applications that will be installed by one decision. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
