For example changing the email notification sound or selecting html as a preference in Kmail is not effected until a KDE restart. Can you confirm that other settings besides kmail's Folder->Prefer HTML to Rich Text and icon name changes are affected? I cannot reproduce the bugs you describe. I then upgraded to with the GM release again with only KDE4. At this time I copied and imported my mail from another machine (which I retired). This problem also appears with the desktop. If I rename an icon the change is not reflected until I restart KDE. Same problem. Updates to desktop are not reflected. I also found that changing the name of a desktop Icon when running KDE3 had the following strange effects when switching back to KDE4. An icon named "Gramps" when renamed to "family tree" under KDE3 ended up with a file type family tree under KDE4??
