[Bug 1172017] New: Thinkpad T570 ALSA regression, tinny audio / low volume
http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1172017 Bug ID: 1172017 Summary: Thinkpad T570 ALSA regression, tinny audio / low volume Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Distribution Version: Leap 15.1 Hardware: x86-64 OS: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Sound Assignee: tiwai@suse.com Reporter: sb56637@gmail.com QA Contact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- Hi there, I have a fairly major issue with my Thinkpad T570 laptop where the audio volume is very low and the audio quality itself is affected, with no base tones and very tinny and distant sounding audio. I have confirmed that the alsamixer master is set to 100%, and the issue affects both PulseAudio and Jack applications, so I assume it's a kernel/ALSA bug. This system was originally installed with Leap 15.0, and I still have an old copy of its kernel. The bug does *not* exist with kernel 4.12.14-lp150.12.4, but for all subsequent kernel updates for Leap 15.0 and 15.1 the bug *does* appear. Sometimes I can boot into the old working kernel and power off / reboot cycle many times, and sometimes it seems to reset something and make the audio sound normal after rebooting into a newer kernel, but this is a very random and haphazard process. What is consistent is that kernel 4.12.14-lp150.12.4 *never* exhibits this bug. This appears to be a known problem, but I can only find older bug reports for other Linux flavors, not sure if the fix was applied to openSUSE's kernel tree? - https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1554304 - https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/1762314 - https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=282800 (This workaround did *not* work for me.) I just booted an Ubuntu 20.04 live USB on the same machine, and the bug was *not* present. However, I didn't configure Jack, whereas on my installed Leap 15.1 system I use the ALSA->PulseAudio->Jack bridge through Cadence. I suspect that is somehow exacerbating the bug or hitting an edge case that wasn't properly fixed if somebody already tried to address this bug. I am attaching dmesg and alsa-info.sh outputs with the old working kernel and also the latest stable kernel 5.6. Thanks a lot for the help. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

For Leap 15.2, it might miss from the GA release (that is shipped on DVD), but certainly the fix will be included in the first maintenance update kernel that will be released almost at the same time of the Leap 15.2 official release.
Very cool, I was wondering if it would make it into Leap too. What about an upstream kernel patch too? You made me think about the BIOS version, I thought I checked that but maybe I should again. Without Windows on the machine that's always a bit of a hassle to update, but I'll try to look into it eventually. Thanks again for everything. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.

(In reply to Takashi Iwai from comment #13) What about an upstream kernel patch too?
Already submitted and merged to my tree: https://lore.kernel.org/r/20200526062406.9799-1-tiwai@suse.de In that thread, a Lenovo guy responded and he'll ask the hardware team about this problem. So there is still a chance to fix this more properly. Let's see. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
