[Bug 332470] New: zypper should automatically try compatible architectures
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=332470 Summary: zypper should automatically try compatible architectures Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Final Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: libzypp AssignedTo: dmacvicar@novell.com ReportedBy: msvec@novell.com QAContact: dmacvicar@novell.com Found By: --- Got this message (on i386): Problem: No valid solution found with just resolvables of best architecture. With this run only resolvables with the best architecture have been regarded. Regarding all possible resolvables takes time, but can come to a valid result. Solution 1: Make a solver run with ALL possibilities. Regarding all resolvables with a compatible architecture. IMHO this should be done automatically, I don't see any reason for asking the user to do it by hand. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It makes sense to ask. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=332470#c2 --- Comment #2 from Klaus Kämpf <kkaempf@novell.com> 2007-10-12 06:47:28 MST --- And the message is misleading since its not only about architecture but to compute _all_ possible solutions which is quite costly. The solver currently does a couple of local optimizations in order to keep the search graph small. Running with 'all possibilities' means to go every possible path do only global optimizations. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

On SLED and in batch mode, "don't ask" is right. On SLES and on the command line, "ask" is right. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=332470#c4 --- Comment #4 from Michal Svec <msvec@novell.com> 2007-10-12 09:23:39 MST --- Well, the user is asked about the installation of packages later on anyways, so he could possibly affect which packages would be installed and which not, right? The messages is if not misleading then definitely not clear, at least to a majority of users (IMHO). I suggest to rephrase it to something like this (provided that it's correct): ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Problem: no solution found using only the current architecture. Only packages for the current architecture (i586) have been regarded. Regarding all compatible architectures could come to a valid result, but would take more time. Do you want to check all compatible architectures [yes]/no? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- I understand resolvables are not packages, but IMHO users don't know what resolvable is, nor the "best architecture". However, I still feel trying i386&al on i586 should be done automatically and without (always) asking, it simply can't be that costly. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
