You can configure the number of visible lines of that window, but that does not seem to have any effect on that minimal size: The setting gets ignored. See also the attached screen shot. This is very annoying since that window consumes pretty much screen space that way, and you can't reduce that amount of screen space. Worse, if you have a setup like in my screen shot, it's very hard to tell if there were any new messages in the current channel whenever you emptied the channel (Ctrl-L). (Yes, I know Ctrl-R, but sometimes it can be very annoying to have leftover text there all the time - it's much easier to spot anything new if the window is empty by default). The minimum height seems to be even larger there. Okay, now I get it. On the 11.0 RC1 Live CD you can decrease the total window size to 514x335 pixel (excluding decoration) and you end up with a chat area size of roughly 7 lines. There is a reason why you can set this to "Unlimited", and I have yet to see a screen that's big enough to fit an unlimited number of lines ;) The minimum size of the window depends on the GUI elements to be displayed as well as the font size on those elements. The font in the chat window does not affect it, because it's a scroll area. The only way to make the window smaller is to hide elements of the GUI, like the Quick buttons. From the screen shot it looks like you have already done this, so you are at the minimum size possible defined by the "size hints" of the remaining elements. Pressing CTRL-H lides the nickname list altogether and you can shrink the window even more.
