System boot setup fine however the support for the HPT366 controller is not loaded, after aborting setup and using linuxrc to load kernel drivers "pata_hpt366" with on prams set (I haven't the clus of what to type there) system tries to load drivers and locks. Attempts using kernal safe settinge with no apic or apm using vesa or text mode result in system lockup after manual HPT366 driver load. main errors include: ata3: faild to rever some devices (errno=5) qc timout -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Boot the installation media and let it finish loading. 2. Switch to command console at vc9 (ctrl-alt-f9) 3. Plug in a USB stick and mount it under /mnt. /var/log/boot.msg and dmesg output will be helpful to determine to which /dev/sdX node the USB stick is attached. You also might need to load filesystem module depending on the fs type used on the USB stick (modprobe ext3; modprobe vfat) 4. cp /var/log/boot.msg /mnt; dmesg > /mnt/dmesg0.log; hwinfo --all > /mnt/hwinfo.log; lspci -nn > /mnt/hwinfo.log; sync 5. modprobe pata_hpt366 6. dmesg > /mnt/dmessg1.log; sync 7. Post the files on USB stick. If step #5 reliably hangs, switch to vc4 right as soon as you execute command on step #5, you'll be able to see kernel log there. If you have access to digital camera, take some photos and post them here. Was able to boot and start install without manually doing anything, by using: "irqpoll splash=verbose brokenmodules=pata_hpt3x2n,pata_hpt37x,pata_hpt366 Which booted using the module hpt366 not pata_hpt366. Running at 33MHz, slow but will work can you suggest away to load the module and have it work in 66Mhz? I expect to try workround the problems with 11.1rc1 this week on this box, though I am rather tempted to go back to "good old" SuSE 8.2 on it, as it's main purpose now is to provide access to some tapes, and is usually switched off. 11.1rc1 I've tried installing on a BP6 with a disk on the HPT366 controller 11.1 rc1, it hung up, I've had previous isssues with 10.3, which I worked round eventually (see https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=338319 ) At time of 10.3 I had similar troubles, reported in https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=338319 The last boot up message before locking up with the IDE light on is :
OpenSUSE Installation program .... Starting udev...
Simplifying and using 1 system disk on the mobo PATA/33 controller, rather than 2 mirrored disks on PATA/33 and HPT366 PATA/66, allowed boot to proceed and the hardware was detected correctly. As I don't think installation ever worked (not 7.1, 7.3 nor 8.0 or 8.2, nor 10.3 and not Ubuntu nor Debian), with a system disk on the HPT366 (though booting off it did, once the right initrd was made), I doubt if it's very important to fix now, so long as post-installation the controller works reliably. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Want to test it soon, to help your case to have it included. Would be very nice if a fix makes it into 11.1 GM. I've downloaded the kernel sources for 11.1-RC1 (2.6.27.7-4.1) planning to build a patched kernel to test, as there's no 2.6.27.7-8.1 source on the update site. If it makes more sense to include more patches, or grab different source please let me know. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Powering up HPT366 attached disk, causes default kernel to hang on boot. With the patch, am getting good performance from both disks, and the system remains surprisingly responsive even under load. Gave the old box a real thrashing, rsync copy of 1.6GB of old SuSE 8.2 update archives between disks, whilst running YaST2 to install kernel sources. Without the patch, HPT366 hangs early in boot; this fix gets my vote! So please either deconfigure the "experimental" pata_hpt366 and revert to the Old IDE driver (completely untested at present); or include Tejun's patch in the release even if upstream are "quibbling" over code ugliness. Should Tejun want new version of patch testing, before 11.1 goes GM, I'd be very happy to oblige. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Either De-power all disks or other IDE devices connected to the HPT366 controller, then update kernel with teheo's patches ( only some of them made it into 2.6.28-rc9 seehttp://lwn.net/Articles/312154/ ) but hopefully all will get included in future SuSE kernels. Or Install using Net or DVD method (NOT Live CD!!!), and boot with brokenmodules=pata_hpt366 which gets beyond udev's probe. I used the "No Local Apic" kernel option to, as my board (BP6) has had some issues with it. Installing via NFS export of loopback mount of downloaded iso file is my preference. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

So now it's not only new kernel, but new install ISO's required :( Using Net install CD libata.force=udma/33 CD loaded kernel, go to The last boot up message before locking up with the IDE light on is :
OpenSUSE Installation program .... Starting udev...
Nothing for many minutes, IDE activity light solidly on. A lot longer than 5 minutes now, so it's hung, like before. libata.force=udma/25, libata.force=udma/16 - same as ever. Left the udev more than 15 minutes on the last run. Workround Suggestion : If there's a reason to use libata/pata_ rather than the brokenmodules=pata_hpt366 workround on install, then simply buy a Promise Ultra 133 TX2 card, or the Ultra 100 TX2 secondhand. They may provide higher performance to, avoid the Promise Ultra 100 20265 etc, as they may have UDMA issues with fast PATA disks. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
