[Bug 634605] New: Kernel:HEAD: Bug. After upgrade from previous 2.6.35.1-3, nouveau/X *extremely* unstable
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=634605 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=634605#c0 Summary: Kernel:HEAD: Bug. After upgrade from previous 2.6.35.1-3, nouveau/X *extremely* unstable Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE.org Version: unspecified Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: 3rd party software AssignedTo: mmarek@novell.com ReportedBy: jnelson-suse@jamponi.net QAContact: opensuse-communityscreening@forge.provo.novell.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- Within minutes of booting 2.6.36-rc2, my X session hung. I rebooted. A half-dozen of these later, and I ssh'd in to see what I could find. 1. nothing in /var/log/messages 2. no kernel crashes 3. keyboard/mouse totally unresponsive (except magic sys-rq) 4. The message snipped below is the only information I found. It was at the end of the Xorg.0.log file. X itself was spinning and using 100% of the CPU. Killing X did not help the display, the box needed to be rebooted. 5. Using the same X drivers and the *stock* openSUSE 11.3 kernel, things seem OK (so far - uptime is 9 minutes which *far* exceeds what I got with 2.6.36rc2). [ 436.020] [mi] EQ overflowing. The server is probably stuck in an infinite loop. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=634605 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=634605#c2 --- Comment #2 from Jon Nelson <jnelson-suse@jamponi.net> 2010-08-27 15:11:10 UTC --- it's possible that the log message is made but never makes it to disk. I'll check my syslog configuration to make sure it is synchronous. Otherwise, yes - i am sure that message is not appearing (in this case - it does appear with some frequency right before slowness or instability). I am back on the stock openSUSE 11.3 kernel (-desktop), but retain the home:jobermayr repo and whatever got updated last night: xorg-x11-driver-video-nouveau-0.0.16_20100826-1.1 Thu 26 Aug 2010 07:55:45 PM CDT xorg-x11-driver-video-7.5.99_20100826-1.2 Thu 26 Aug 2010 07:55:43 PM CDT Mesa-7.8.99_20100826-2.1 Thu 26 Aug 2010 07:55:31 PM CDT libdrm-2.4.99_20100826-1.1 Thu 26 Aug 2010 07:55:06 PM CDT drm-nouveau-kmp-desktop-20100620_k2.6.34.0_12-1.1 Wed 25 Aug 2010 11:25:42 PM CDT Seems to be working pretty well for me. The previous iterations of xorg-x11-driver-video and -nouveau were not working out as well. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=634605 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=634605#c3 --- Comment #3 from Robert Kaiser <kairo@kairo.at> 2010-11-04 11:48:42 UTC --- I'm seeing symptoms like this as well on Kernel:HEAD 2.6.36 and have been for some time during various rcX versions, not sure when it started. For me, the last message in /var/log/messages when the screen corrupts and gets stuck is [drm] nouveau 0000:01:00.0: PFIFO_DMA_PUSHER - Ch 1 As I can find out by logging in via ssh (which still works, while keyboard is dead and mouse moves the pointer but can't do anything else on the frozen display). Only a reboot helps to get the system working again until the next such case happens. Interestingly, this seems to happen more often as long as the computer is cold, once it has run for some time, after a few reboots caused due to this, it can run for hours and work. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I'm going to close this as invalid since 11.4 is using 2.6.37. Depending on your chipset, you may run into issues with nouveau. There is an undocumented microcontroller in, at least, the ion2 that is prone to locking up with the current code. I've heard this may have gotten better recently, though.
