[Bug 222162] New: after grub fstab mixed partitions between IDE and SATA disks
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=222162 Summary: after grub fstab mixed partitions between IDE and SATA disks Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Beta 2 plus Platform: i686 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: christoph@pilarsdepilar.de QAContact: qa@suse.de Dear sirs I have installed opensuse 10.1 on IDE and opensuse 10.2 beta2 on SATA. If I decide to boot from SATA, GRUB of the 10.2 starts properly, then suddenly it mixes up the partitions from both HDD's and tries to boot some parts from IDE and some parts from SATA. Please find below the results from fstab and irom fdisk -l as well as the error messages while booting. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=222162 ------- Comment #2 from christoph@pilarsdepilar.de 2006-11-20 10:14 MST ------- Created an attachment (id=106278) --> (https://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=106278&action=view) yast files here you get the requested yast-logfiles and a copy of fstab - but i do not think that they will help you very much 1) if only boot from SATA, the disk will be detected as sda and mounted to sda 1 as swap, sda2 as / and sda3 as /home 2) if i conect SATA and IDE disks, mbr and grub starts correctly from SATA-disk, but then they identify the SATA-disk as sdb and connect the IDE as sda. As on the IDE is also a suse version 10.1 the system starts booting with kernel from SATA and then it mounts the partitions from IDE - which is wrong. https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=222162 ------- Comment #3 from christoph@pilarsdepilar.de 2006-12-02 11:57 MST ------- I updated last week to RC1 but the problem is still there. Any news? What logfile do you need? Does the logfile really make sense? Which one do you need? 1) The system does not really boot as soon as I connect IDE-Disk. As I discribed first it starts correctly with bootloader from SATA but then it takes the modules from IDE. REASON: During bootperiode the system (Kerne?) mixes sda and sdb. At start SATA is sda (like selection from BIOS) then, after GRUB, IDE is sda. Thats the problem!!! 2) If you want any logfile (please detailed file) think about that I first have to start the system with both HDD's, save file on a floppy and then reboot with SATA only to have normal system access again. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

The log files do not make so much sense. At least everything look right so far. And there's no sdb in there. Am still trying to find out what's going on. Some things make me wonder. You're writing about 'selection from BIOS' concerning the boot disk. Not selecting boot system in a grub menu. Please be aware that this action renumberes the disks as the boot disk in BIOS based systems always get number 0x80 for first disk, (hd0) in grub speech. This might cause the problem. You're writing about connecting/disconnecting disk. Results in a similar scenario like the above. You'd need to use mount-by-id if you are planning to reconfigure your machine and want it still to be bootable. Concerning the hdX <-> sdY confusion: I'm not sure but some driver might have changed its naming sceme/storage architecture from hdX to sdY from 10.1 to 10.2 The logs look like they are from the 10.1 system on you're IDE disk. I'd need the stuff from the updated system on the SATA device. I'd really like to get a hand on the whole /var/log/YaST2 and /boot/grub/ directories and /etc/grub.conf. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
