[Bug 682508] New: During upgrade grub is installed in NTFS partition
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=682508 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=682508#c0 Summary: During upgrade grub is installed in NTFS partition Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.4 Version: Final Platform: i586 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.4 Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: gerhard_gross@gmx.de QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- Created an attachment (id=421296) --> (http://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=421296) error documenting files User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:2.0b12) Gecko/20110222 Firefox/4.0b12 After having upgraded my openSUSE 11.3 in a logical partition (/dev/sda6) from DVD, I couldn't boot anymore my windows in /dev/sda2. After investigation I conclude that grub was installed into /dev/sda2 during upgrade and corrupted the windows NTFS partition. Before the upgrade, grub started with stage 1.5 to the boot menu (this is displayed a few seconds before the boot menu appears). grub was installed in /dev/sda6. After the upgrade, it was displayed that grub starts with stage 2. I attach following files for documentation: - grub.conf: modification date is day of the upgrade - menu.lst: contains "root=/dev/sdb6", which is wrong, because there is no /dev/sdb. - fdisk-l.txt, fdisk-lu.txt: fdisk -l, fdisk -lu - MBR.txt: dump of first 256 bytes of /dev/sda - sda2-2Sect.txt: dump of first 512 bytes of /dev/sda2. Shows the text "GRUB" as hint that grub is installed there, below the text "NTLDR", which comes from the windows installation - df-vm.txt: df -vm - grub-analyse.txt: analyze script showing that grub is only installed in /dev/sda2. This had happened again earlier when I upgraded from openSUSE 11.2 to 11.3. There is a thread discussing this, where I reported it: http://forums.opensuse.org/english/get-technical-help-here/install-boot-logi... On this occasion I was prepared: I copied the first sectors of a /dev/sda2-dd-backup back to the partition and installed grub like this: root (hd0,5), setup (hd0), and the system was ok again. Reproducible: Didn't try Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
