[Bug 211303] New: Update to alpha5 leaves me with only 60Hz display
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=211303 Summary: Update to alpha5 leaves me with only 60Hz display Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Alpha 5 Platform: i686 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: X.Org AssignedTo: sndirsch@novell.com ReportedBy: matz@novell.com QAContact: sndirsch@novell.com I updated to alpha5 from alpha4plus, and now the X server decides to not be able to set a sensible refresh rate anymore, i.e. I have now a 60Hz display (I'm using a CRT, so that's unbearable, ergo blocker). I'm using the Xen kernel, but I was also using that in alpha4plus. And I use DRI, like also with alpha4plus. I.e. I changed nothing, I just updated. I use a i915 video card. Anyway, the important snippets from the Xorg.0.log seem to be: [current one:] (II) I810(0): Will use BIOS call 0x5f05 to set refresh rates for CRTs. .. (II) I810(0): Monitor[0]: Using hsync range of 30.00-121.00 kHz (II) I810(0): Monitor[0]: Using vrefresh range of 48.00-160.00 Hz .. (II) I810(0): Attempting to use 85.19Hz refresh for mode "1600x1200" (84b) .. (II) I810(0): BIOS call 0x5f05 not supported, setting refresh with VBE 3 method. [that was the last line with "refresh" in it] A former Xorg.log showed this (though that was under the -default kernel still): (II) I810(0): Will use BIOS call 0x5f05 to set refresh rates for CRTs. (II) I810(0): Setting refresh with VBE 3 method. Note how the last line was added. So it seems the new xorg version does notice that it has to use VBE method 3, but then actually doesn't use it. xorg-x11-7.1-27 -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

I also said that I was using Xen already with the Alpha4plus. I just didn't find an Xorg logfile from that anymore. But okay, I'll try with the -default kernel, just to be sure it isn't some change which occurred there. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

It indeed is the Xen kernel. With the -default one I get my 85 Hz back. One difference is, that it now detects the VBE bios again: (WW) I810(0): Bad V_BIOS checksum (II) I810(0): Primary V_BIOS segment is: 0xc000 (II) I810(0): VESA BIOS detected (II) I810(0): VESA VBE Version 3.0 (II) I810(0): VESA VBE Total Mem: 32448 kB (II) I810(0): VESA VBE OEM: Intel(r)Grantsdale-G Graphics Chip Accelerated VGA BIOS (II) I810(0): VESA VBE OEM Software Rev: 1.0 (II) I810(0): VESA VBE OEM Vendor: Intel Corporation (II) I810(0): VESA VBE OEM Product: Intel(r)Grantsdale-G Graphics Controller (II) I810(0): VESA VBE OEM Product Rev: Hardware Version 0.0 This would of course explain why it couldn't set the refresh under Xen, because obviously VBE method can't work without VBE. So this is a Xen regression, because in alpha4plus it still could detect the VBE. Interestingly only sometimes (after the third restart of the X server it was totally confused and stoped working, because the VBE was in some unexpected address) but still. Anyway, not really an X bug (except of course that it could detect that it wasn't able to see a VESA bios, so it shouldn't even try to use VBE method 3, and instead perhaps show a clear error message). The (current) log file still says that it found the BIOS (it just says so on time less than the native one, apparently because APM is unavailable under Xen). It would be really helpful if you could install the Alpha4+ Xen and kernel and retry, to make clear there indeed was a change on either Xen or kernel side that is causing this issue. Further, if that was verified, you could try using the newer Xen with the older kernel (or vice versa) - it's not 100% sure these combinations will work at all, but certainly worth a try. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
