Summary: "Novell Customer Center Configuration": error message truncated Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: unspecified Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: SuSE Other Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: gp@novell.com QAContact: jsrain@novell.com
When trying to register a STABLE/FACTORY machine I installed today, I got the following error message in a dialog without title:
Error
None of the installed products can be registerd at the Novell reistrati
Here the message ended, and I would have needed to scroll.
This is rather bad. The window is, by far, sufficiently large and we should show the user the full message without scrolling.
This was in graphical/Qt YaST.

------- Comment #1 from jdsn@novell.com 2007-05-04 10:51 MST ------- Do you have a screenshot of this dialog? I can not find any error dialog that looks like what you described.
Did you have to click on a "Details" button to see the error message? Then the message was in a richtext box. I can resize the box for this message to fit into but there will always be others. The error messages are sent from the registration server - we have no influence on that.

------- Comment #2 from gp@novell.com 2007-05-05 17:04 MST ------- Sorry, I don't have a screenshot ready, and it is a couple of months ago this happened so I do not remember in detail. Usually, I am attaching a screenshot for this kind of situation, so something most have gone wrong with the system back then (unrelated to this issue, probably).
But, wait...
..this is still trivially reproducibly with the current state of STABLE. Just run the registration module and you'll see it!

By the way, I recommend to combine these two messages.
Also, the text of the first message indicates that the act of connecting ran into an error, not that the server sent an error response.

------- Comment #5 from jdsn@novell.com 2007-05-08 09:54 MST ------- Ah, so it was the default error message.
(In reply to comment #4)

No, I would not recommend that. This is a generic popup for errors when talking with the registration server. The error message could be anything, it is sent by the server or comes from suse_register (the script) for the few known errors. But it can be anything - we already saw perl debug output there. If we showed this directly most users would be confused. In the beginning of the registration there wasn't even a Details button. It was added later for the experienced user to get an idea what happended. And as you see, resizing does not make much sense as there will always be messages that do not fit into this window.

Well, then read the message again :) It was created as a generic error message that is used for errors that occur when talking to the registration server.
What do you prefer: WORKSFORME or WONTFIX ?

Okay, that's a fair point.

That was a good idea, thank!

This is the part I disagree with: Once we have the string, let's just resize the window accordingly (up to a maximum size), or let's have the error message automatically formatted to be several lines, flowing within available space.
What do you prefer: WORKSFORME or WONTFIX ?
Fixed, pleased. ;-) The main issue reported here is about the text not fitting in the dialog, so we either should make the dialog wider to fit the text or reformat the error message automatically.
I'd hope that either approach is just a view lines of code?
