[Bug 343412] New: CDs written by k3b at high writing speeds cannot be read.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=343412 Summary: CDs written by k3b at high writing speeds cannot be read. Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Final Platform: 32bit OS/Version: openSUSE 10.3 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: KDE AssignedTo: kde-maintainers@suse.de ReportedBy: nice@titanic.nyme.hu QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: Other I experienced that when I burn a CD at higher speeds (i.e. above 4x) then it cannot be read. I had to dispose of some CDs when I was trying to burn the openSUSE 10.3 network setup CDs, until I learned that CDs written at 4x speed can be read. DVD burning always seemed to be OK. K3B reporst my DVD drive to be "TSSTcorp CD/DVDW TS-L632D". The machine is HP Compaq nc6320. Today I attempted to reproduce this symptom but I didn't succed. I wrote a CD at max speed (12x) and I could read it afterwards. Was it a known bug and has been fixed? Anyway the data tracks on a CD written under Linux seem to be dimmer than than on CDs written under Windows on a very similar machine. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

There were no changes in wodim recently. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

My aim was to report every bug I can find in openSUSE 10.3 but I thing this one is absolutely false positive, since I couldn't reproduce it. I'm sure that this problem existed on my current computer, but maybe not unter 10.3 but 10.2, which used cdrecord instead of wodim as the back-end for k3b. I will close this but. I hope I will be able to reopen it when I will be able to reproduce this symptom somehow. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I just wanted to burn http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/10.2/iso/cd/openSUSE-10.2-GM-i386-... in order to test the driver under 10.2 too. I wrote it at full speed (the setting was 24x but k3b did it ad 12x), and the CD remained blank. I was able to burn the iso image onto the same CD again! For second time the burning suceeded and data can be re-read, but data tracks on the surface are so dim that they are totally invisible for human eye which is unusual, isn't it? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Can you try wodim -toc on the media which remained blank? Can you reproduce it again and attach the log from k3b? (I don't think that checking the recording quality with your eyes is useful, since the wavelength used to read the CD is outside the visible light ;) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

It sounds funny, but in spite of the fact that these tracks are intended to be read by invisible light, they are definitely visible. Then I tried to write the 11.1-Beta 5 NET ISO file at full speed (24x), but the disk remained blank. When I insert in another machine's DVD-ROM, that machine detects a blank/empty disk. OpenSUSE 11.1 doesn't detect any optical disk at all (at least with KDE4). The informations you asked from me: milleniumfalcon:~ # wodim -toc Device was not specified. The write power is fully controlled by the firmware and wodim can't do much about it. Additionally, google can find a lot of similar reports (blank CD after burn) with this drive, even on windows. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
