[Bug 229277] New: SUSPEND2DISK_RESTART_SERVICES is not used
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=229277 Summary: SUSPEND2DISK_RESTART_SERVICES is not used Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: i586 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Other AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: suse+build@de-korte.org QAContact: qa@suse.de After resuming from suspend-to-disk, the serial ports are not correctly setup anymore. In this case, a UPS is connected. The connection to the UPS through the serial port is lost after resuming. This means two problems were introduced with openSUSE 10.2 1) In SuSE 10.1, after a suspend to disk, the serial ports were restored to their original state and the aforementioned driver was able to connect to the UPS without restarting (or any interference for that matter). This no longer works. You'll either need to restart the driver or do 'hwscan --all', which both restore the connection. 2) SUSPEND2DISK_RESTART_SERVICES (from /etc/sysconfig/powersave/sleep) could be used to automate this (and may be needed for other services too), but is no longer used (again, this worked in 10.1). I'm using HIBERNATE_METHOD="kernel" ("userspace" crashes on this machine) on a system without ACPI support (acpi=off apm=power-off). Short of failing to monitor a UPS after the resuming from the suspend to disk state, suspend-to-disk works. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Ugh, tree-bugs-combo.
Uhm, sorry about that.
1) Can you try to unload/reload serial modules to see if that helps? I guess so, it is really similar to restart...
I'm sorry, what is the name of this module? I'll attach the output from 'lsmod' since I have no idea what to look for.
2) Stefan, can you see why RESTART_SERVICES is broken?
Additionally, why has 'var/log/pm-suspend.log' not been updated since upgrading to openSUSE 10.2. After moving it away, it isn't created again. As far as I know, this file should be created through a call to '/usr/lib/powersave/scripts/prepare_suspend_to_disk', but apparently this doesn't happen.
3) What is wrong with userspace? Where does it crash? Oops?

Fair enough.
See: http://en.opensuse.org/Bugs:Suspend_Failure especially the "IMPORTANT" section http://en.opensuse.org/Pm-utils especiallly the "Creating your own hooks" and "disabling a hook" sections.
I did look these up. Unfortunately, it was only after checking out the contents of '/var/adm/fillup-templates/sysconfig.sleep-powersave' that the message hit home. The upgrade to openSUSE 10.2 only added the 'DEPRECATED! Configuration for suspend is done in /etc/pm/config' to end of /etc/powersave/sleep. I misjudged that completely. Other than that, I had not expected that the functionality of *_RESTART_SERVICES would have been removed from the default installation. It would have been better the required hook would have been created by the installation of the nut package. And consequently, that pm-utils would be a requirement for nut, on addition to powersave. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

Well, if nut needs such a hook, it should package it by itself, so this missing hook is probably a bug in the nut package (i don't know anything about nut).

Actually powersave should no longer be required for anything. The only thing that powersave does right now is: act as a default policy manager as long as no desktop environment is started (and if you uninstall pm-utils, you can use it for suspend as before in 10.1, but this is not recommended and not supported by us anymore). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

It does. I'll file a bugreport for that.

I guess it would be safe to remove this dependency from nut and replace it by pm-utils. I found one other package that depends on powersave by the way (smartmontools). Should I file a bug for that one as well? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

i think both nut and smartmontools only depend on powersaved to be able to display messages to the user in a somewhat desktop-agnostic way. This will soon stop working anyway, so yes, bug reports for those packages are probably good :-) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
