[Bug 264077] New: cpu freq scalling doens't work
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=264077 Summary: cpu freq scalling doens't work Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: i686 OS/Version: openSUSE 10.2 Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: KDE AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: d_a_n_d_u@yahoo.com QAContact: qa@suse.de I've just done an KDE update from here: http://software.opensuse.org/download/KDE:/KDE3/openSUSE_10.2/ and my CPU is stuck at 800mhz I've tried everithing I knew but I can't get it to 1.73ghz as it worked before this update -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=264077 ------- Comment #3 from stbinner@novell.com 2007-04-13 10:27 MST ------- Your "just done" update is the one of 4 April after which you installed/updated 67 other package!? This lets me doubt that it's an KDE problem. As you seem to have also GNOME installed, does it happen there also? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=264077 ------- Comment #4 from d_a_n_d_u@yahoo.com 2007-04-13 11:13 MST ------- The problem appeared after the 04.04 update, I didn't get a chance to report it until now. I only have some gnome packages installed for various gnome applications that I use. I've tried setting the cpu freq using cpufreq-set and it still doesn't work. # cpufreq-set -f 1733000 # cpufreq-info cpufrequtils 002: cpufreq-info (C) Dominik Brodowski 2004-2006 Report errors and bugs to http://bugs.opensuse.org, please. analyzing CPU 0: driver: centrino CPUs which need to switch frequency at the same time: 0 hardware limits: 800 MHz - 1.73 GHz available frequency steps: 1.73 GHz, 1.33 GHz, 1.07 GHz, 800 MHz available cpufreq governors: conservative, ondemand, userspace, powersave, performance current policy: frequency should be within 800 MHz and 800 MHz. The governor "userspace" may decide which speed to use within this range. current CPU frequency is 800 MHz (asserted by call to hardware). # cpufreq-set -g performance # cpufreq-info cpufrequtils 002: cpufreq-info (C) Dominik Brodowski 2004-2006 Report errors and bugs to http://bugs.opensuse.org, please. analyzing CPU 0: driver: centrino CPUs which need to switch frequency at the same time: 0 hardware limits: 800 MHz - 1.73 GHz available frequency steps: 1.73 GHz, 1.33 GHz, 1.07 GHz, 800 MHz available cpufreq governors: conservative, ondemand, userspace, powersave, performance current policy: frequency should be within 800 MHz and 800 MHz. The governor "performance" may decide which speed to use within this range. current CPU frequency is 800 MHz (asserted by call to hardware). It's strange that for 'performance' it still says 'within 800 MHz and 800 MHz'. Is this ok? You may be right, this could be an issue with some other package, not KDE. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

If cpufreq is limited at cpufreq initialisation, the stored max_freq (user_policy.max in drivers/cpufreq/cpufreq.c) is set to the limited frequency what is wrong. Consequence is that when the frequency is limited (e.g. by BIOS) at boot time, it won't be increased anymore, even BIOS allows higher freqs again. IIRC you should be able to workaround this by: echo MAX_FREQ >/sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/scaling_max_freq I have a patch for that, but got no answer when posting it. I will repost the next days... (see bug #231107). Really strange is that the logic when frequency should get limited is inverted in your case (low on AC, high on battery). This could have to do with not sorted frequencies in userspace? Hmm, this should only affect userspace governor and should already be fixed in 10.2, but I am not sure about that, Holger? Could you please attach acpidump output (also set the "This comment provides the needed information. Remove the status of NEEDINFO from this bug." button (yes it's a bit hidden -> below were you write the comment in), so that I see that I have to answer again). -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
