[Bug 1172367] New: translation-update-upstream is outdated and cannot be updated

http://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1172367 Bug ID: 1172367 Summary: translation-update-upstream is outdated and cannot be updated Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Distribution Version: Leap 15.2 Hardware: Other OS: Other Status: CONFIRMED Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Translations Assignee: sbrabec@suse.com Reporter: sbrabec@suse.com QA Contact: ke@suse.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- The old set of translation update tools: translation-update-upstream and translation-update were not update for Leap 15.2 yet, as their supplementary tools fail, and it is too complicated to complete the translation update using a tool designed 13 years ago for intltool support only. Now GNOME massively uses meson and xgettext with custom pot generators. There is no way how translation-update-upstream can implement this properly. After thinking on possibilities, I consider the dropping of all translation updates for Leap 15.2 is the best solution. It will cause minor translation regression for legacy packages (libgnomecanvas, libgnomecups, pan and possibly several others, but it will prevent future breakage). After Leap 15.2, translation-update-upstream + translation-update should be deactivated and replaced by a future tool. For 15.2, keeping GNOME release time translations seems to be the best option. The original purpose of translation-update-upstream: GNOME release translations -> GNOME release + 3 months translations The current situation (Leap 15.1 translation-update in Leap 15.2) would cause massive regressions: GNOME release translations -> old GNOME + 3 months release translations - regressions caused by possibly bad pot heuristics. The situation after making dummy translation-update-upstream + translation-update: GNOME release translations = Leap 15.2 translations -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
