Can you provide some error messages and decribe what you made or how to reproduce it, please? OK, it is true that the fillup template uses old default (syslogd). But the %post sections in spec files from syslogd and syslog-ng update the SYSLOG_DAEMON variable. So this should be not a problem. The /etc/init.d/syslog script trys to detect which syslog daemon is running and which one is configured. I've seen a problem like this, when the installer was broken and didn't followed rpm dependencies installing syslog* before klogd (basically because klogd was not on the first CD). Or if one ignores RPM dependencies manually, of course. The case, that neither syslog-ng nor syslogd are installed, is OK to cause failures IMO (circular deps klogd req syslogd|syslog-ng is not a good idea). On erase, %postun resets $SYSLOG_DAEMON to "" if the erased daemon is configured. On install / update, %post sets SYSLOG_DAEMON to the currently installed daemon if it is "" or points to an non-existing daemon.
