The problem seems to be related with a check for the running kernel and the boot loader in place - in my case elilo. The problem apparently is in /usr/lib/pm-utils/sleep.d.backup/99Zgrub which only knows grub. I modified the prepare_parameters function to include elilo and grub2-efi. In this case suspend hibernate works as expected. On my system the kernel files are in /boot/efi/efi/SuSE/ but there is also a folder /boot/grub2 and a symlink /boot/grub2-efi pointing to /boot/grub2. I'm clueless if this is necessary but it results in a usable system.
