[Bug 272097] New: Could YaST autodetect i586 systems vs. i686?
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=272097 Summary: Could YaST autodetect i586 systems vs. i686? Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Alpha 3plus Platform: i586 OS/Version: openSUSE 10.3 Status: NEW Severity: Enhancement Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: HANtwister@comcast.net QAContact: jsrain@novell.com This is an enhancement request - could YaST be made to automatically detect if an x86 system is an i586 or i686, and automatically select the appropriate version of glibc and any other architecture-specific packages? This might save some new users with older/specialty computers a bit of confusion. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

YaST does not automatically select the i586 version of Glibc when installing, so I have to select that manually. Further, if I have YaST select to install all matching -debuginfo packages, it automatically selects the i686 version of glibc-debuginfo, even though the i586 version of glibc is installed, causing a conflict, and, once again, I have to select the i586 architecture manually. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

[ I was previously led to believe that this Processor supported some i686 features, but not all, and, thus, it was an i586 ] Although I haven't had any real problems in openSuSE to date using the i686 version of glibc (I've reinstalled it), I have had random crashes with some i686-only programs on this computer in other Operating Systems that worked perfectly fine on a 'true' i686) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

From an installers point of view, your processor is an i686. It identifies itself as i686 and also supports 'cmov' and 'cx8', which are important for the i686 variant of glibc.
If some applications don't work properly, please file specific bug reports. Steffen, NEEDINFO to you. Please have a look at comment #7 and explain the last 'i386' on the uname line. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
