https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=372151 Summary: Canon pixma/pixus drivers Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Final Platform: Other OS/Version: openSUSE 10.3 Status: NEW Severity: Enhancement Priority: P5 - None Component: Basesystem AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: hoea@gmx.at QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Canon has some new, low priced multifunction printers, e.g. the MP 140 is a low as EUR 60. The printers are not supported by cups out-of-the-box but need self compiled drivers/programs. But the drivers of Canon are not OpenSource, some important parts of the driver functions are done in share libraries (and this part is not included as source code). Beside the important fact, that we cannot provide our usual service for such drivers, e.g. working on security updates, as we don't have access to the source code, there is another problem with these closed source code drivers. As these libraries are only for i386 (32bit and Intel), we cannot provide drivers for all of our supported platforms: x86_64 (e.g. AMD64), ppc64 (e.g. MacBook), S390. And there is another issue with this restriction: customers are not able to connect several different Canon printers at their machine (but USB can do!) As far as I know the libraries "overwrite" each other and are not compatible. So customer can either connect and print to e.g. a Canon Pixma IP2500 or to a Canon Pixma MP160, but not to both at the same time. We cannot fix this, as we don't have access to the source code. Therefore my suggested solution is that you might want to ask Canon if they can give you openSUSE drivers? BTW Please note that HP is able to write full OpenSource drivers and therefore they are supported (included) by our distribution. If you don't get drivers from Canon and you're not capable to build them by your own, you might want to rethink if Canon is the right vendor for you? As said ... HP is fully supported (since years). Please reopen bugzilla, when Canon is able to provide full OpenSource code drivers, and we will start to integrate them. In the meantime I have to close this bug with INVALID. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

But still the drivers are not OpenSource. We (= SUSE distribution) have still the same problems with them as told in Comment #1 As said before: if you want to support OpenSource, feel free to tell Canon what your opinion regarding this topic is. As printer vendors are selling in most cases similar models, the differcation is their support of OpenSource. HP is a vendor who is providing full OpenSource code for their printers, whereas Canon not. Think about honoring this attribute in your next buy, and suggesting printers for friends and family. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
