[Bug 520572] New: Changing the Use of an Onboard Video GPU to a PCIE Vidoe Card GPU is not Recognised
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=520572 Summary: Changing the Use of an Onboard Video GPU to a PCIE Vidoe Card GPU is not Recognised Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.1 Version: Final Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.1 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: X11 Applications AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: alpha096@virginbroadband.com.au QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-GB; rv:1.9.0.10) Gecko/2009042700 SUSE/3.0.10-1.1.1 Firefox/3.0.10 I have an 11.1 Installation running for some months and after adding the Nvida Repository, the package manager was able to read the hardware that was in the PC and change the Video Driver to the most apt Being a Nvida GFXG01. Due to my personal demands on Video GPU';s I installed a new PCIE 512 MB Nvida GeFORCE 8400 GS into the PCIE slot and started the PC. The O/S responded quickly and reconfigured the devices change without too much of a worry. The problem then became that no automatic update was made of the correct software driver in the NVIDA Repository. If the mere Addition of the Nvida Repository auto added the update Video Driver when forst installed, why cannot this same thing happen when we physically change any hardware component. I wonder how we would handle software if a change was made to a sound card. Its hard enough to get a sound driver installed in the first instance...but I digress. How can we handle software updates in response to Hardware changes? as currently it appears we cannot do this Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.As above - No action was taken to update the video hardware change driver 2. 3. Actual Results: The same Video Driver remained in place. I am just glad I did not install an ATI card then I would have serious issues Expected Results: If we can recognise changes in Hardware and reconfigure them on the fly, why cannot we do the same for software specific drivers of hardware changes where they are available. QA - please check that I have selected the correct component please. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Stefan, I am not suggesting VIDEO Specific drivers change to be accommodated here.
Ok. Understood.
I would just like to have a PC running on Motherboard GPU and the user later installing a PCIe. Why cannot we recognise a change in hardware video and support a default Video that we package to address the new PCIe as in the above.
We're already trying to do our best here by letting the Xserver chose the appropriate driver. We don't have a mechanism to automatically install proprietary drivers from the ATI/NVIDIA channel (*) or inform the user about this possibility (**). BTW, it's not that unusual to search for an approprate driver and install it after changing the graphics card on other operating systems either. It's rather easy on openSUSE. Add the NVIDIA/ATI repository (official Community repository) and perform Software installation. The right packages will be autoselected and installed. (*) wouldn't be appreciated by our OpenSource enthusiasts (**) a bunch of our OpenSource enthusiasts would complain as well -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
