I was expecting the issue to be on the client side (pxelinux) or to be an image size problem. Unfortunately, the patch has never made it upstream (it does have issues with multicase - see https://www.compuphase.com/tftp.htm, thus rollover should probably not be used when multicast transfers are requested). Upstreaming seem to be irrelevant today as atftp looks pretty much like a dead project which has received its last patch in 2014. I've now switched to HPA's tpftd: this seems to work with pxelinux (well, it should!) and u-boot, it doesn't work with the atftp client.
