Fn+Home should step up brightness of the screen. Fn+End should step down brightness of the screen. On the default installation with gnome, using the key combinations shows a window on the screen showing the brightness icon and a horizontal bar. This indicates both combinations trigger behavior. Unfortunately, the use of both combination triggers change in brightness, but it first looks at random. Behavior of both key combinations can put brightness up or down instead of just up or just down. It also appears the bar can step up or down after some fiddling with the same key combination. This does not show change of the brightness in steps. It can show a change when the Fn key is released and used again in the key combinations.
