[Bug 263881] New: non suse chameleon branding
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=263881 Summary: non suse chameleon branding Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Alpha 3 Platform: Other OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Blocker Priority: P5 - None Component: Other AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: s.handgraaf@xs4all.nl QAContact: qa@suse.de It is confusing how the Chameleon branding is implemented in the 10.3 branding. In several images the original SUSE chameloen has been replaced by a non-standard and very different chameleon. Imho this is not compatible with this kind of quality distribution. Although there is yet no information how to implement the official chameleon in branding, using different chameleons does nog make the distribution very friendly branded. The official SUSE chameleon is designed for branding. Please use that chameleon. Do not just use any chameleon because it is a chameleon. The official chameleon is a statement: only this chameleon represents SUSE. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

I can not fully agree with the proposed solution since this problem goes back to the basics of branding. We have official branding, the official chameleon. Now suddenly since some people like the new design this time we should ask to drop the official branding? I think the discussion then should be why we have official branding. It is the whole concept how people recognize the distribution. The designs are subject to that, that is how branding works. Not other way around like I feel now is suggested. I propose to indeed discuss this issue, but start with making ground rules for branding. Then from there we can discuss how new designs can be implemented. Designing is a creative process, but is always done for a purpose. The purpose of branding is recognition, not changing designs because they look better. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

In addition, the designer replaced the official branding chameleon by his own design from - CD/DVD boot http://en.opensuse.org/Branding_Overview:os10.3:CD_Boot - Installer wallpaper http://en.opensuse.org/Branding_Overview:os10.3:installer - Boot Process (bootsplash) http://en.opensuse.org/Branding_Overview:os10.3:Bootsplash The official chameleon for unknown reasons was kept on some other parts of the boot process. - Boot selection (grub) http://en.opensuse.org/Branding_Overview:os10.3:Grub - Login http://en.opensuse.org/Branding_Overview:os10.3:GDM This only strenghtens me in my point there should be rules for branding in the first place. When and where new designs of chameleons and other branding marks can be implemented. Now we have two chameleons in primary processes. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

That the art you mention is not official branding art. Novell/SUSE plays with the chameloen alright, but never in such a way it is mixed on major points like the distribution or end branding. Besides that, branding is not something to mess around with on regular basis. Succesfull and well known brands seldom change logo's, styles etc. That is the whole concept of branding. That does not mean I am against playing at some moments, but how this is currently done and implemented is far from branding as objective. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

(boot process image) And yes, I think we need to define new rules, but for branding I believe we should not stop every artwork idea completely. We must use some voting scheme, which will be simple for normal artwork and more complex (require more community votes) for branding change. (and Novell agreement too) That is, the SuSE chameleon was changed several times from SUSE 7.0 to 10.0 releases, so I believe this could be changed with new artwork in new release, but I believe that we must use some voting mechanisms for that. I think that stopping branding modifications completely is wrong, and it will result in ugly artwork *and* branding. I believe the rules must define acceptable way for brand evolution, as it occured from SUSE 7.x to the 10.x series. -- -Alexey Eremenko "Technologov" -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

About Novell agreement. How is the current new chameleon artwork in complience with this?
That is, the SuSE chameleon was changed several times from SUSE 7.0 to 10.0 releases, so I believe this could be changed with new artwork in new release
My conclusion: SuSE/Novell was not very professional in branding the products. There is a big gap between other operating systems / distributions.
I think that stopping branding modifications completely is wrong, and it will result in ugly artwork *and* branding.
How does the latter match to stopping modification? Only in the very long run if the design is good. Since this is a community the votes will change over and over about different artwork.
I believe the rules must define acceptable way for brand evolution, as it occured from SUSE 7.x to the 10.x series.
Does SUSE/Novell have a protocol for this? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

A big gap where? Microsoft have changed the windows logo with nearly every release, 3.1, 95, xp, vista have different versions of the windows logo at least. Apple have evolved their logo too, as have other linux distributions. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

MS is years apart and only a very few major changes. 3.1, 95,98,ME: playfull. To XP major and then again only minor. Not to mention the name style which remained the same for over 20 years. Apple, subtile logo evolvement over years, almost none in years scale. RedHat? Fedora? Ubuntu? Compared to the SUSE changes still not comparable. And even if these examples evolve more frequent: why should opensuse? It is how we as a community adopt marketing and branding for our favorite distribution. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
