[Bug 570371] New: Xen Dom-U cannot read disk or file system after OS update
http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=570371 http://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=570371#c0 Summary: Xen Dom-U cannot read disk or file system after OS update Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.2 Version: Final Platform: Other OS/Version: openSUSE 11.2 Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Xen AssignedTo: jdouglas@novell.com ReportedBy: hq@unixlinuxauthority.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux x86_64; en-US; rv:1.9.1.6) Gecko/20091201 SUSE/3.5.6-1.1.1 Firefox/3.5.6 In openSuSE-11.1 and openSuSE-11.2. If we use opensuse same version as xen virtual machine with basic install, it works. But if we update the OS, after reboot the virtual machine cannot start. It cannot read the file system (I tried with ext3 fs). Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Install openSuSE-11.2 virtual machine under openSuSE-11.2 DOM-0, but do not update the virtual machine. 2.Reboot, and it works fine. Noe update the OS. 3.You find the error messages on consol or vnc. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

How did you verify that those modules don't get loaded? In particular for plaform-pci, the driver would need to be blacklisted in order to prevent its loading (as it otherwise gets loaded automatically due to it servicing a present PCI device). I would really think that the drivers get loaded, and that's what is causing the problems. Consequently, a workaround would appear to be to uninstall xen-kmp-* right after the kernel update, before rebooting the VM. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Without these KMPs the guests will run the disk and nic drivers as emulated devices which is much slower. Normally these xen-kmp's are installed automatically at install time although I'm not sure about 11.2 (Ky?). I suppose they could have manually deselected them. I would think that if they are not present when a kernel upgrade is done then they shouldn't be installed.
Yes, absolutely. And imo a 'supplements' note generally shouldn't have that effect, unless perhaps an update adds it anew. If that latter scenario was the case here, then the Xen KMPs definitely will need special handling, or the update process would have to properly alter other kernel configuration (root= boot option, /etc/fstab, list of drivers in initrd). Same goes for Recommends:, just the other way around. If this is causing problems, then a workaround would be to kill the Supplements: in xen-kmp. That way, user would have to explicitely select xen-kmp-$flavor for installation (later, it would be automatically updated of course). Would that work for you? The formula in xen.spec would be %define __find_supplements sh -c '/usr/lib/rpm/find-supplements %{name} | grep -v ^modalias' or simply %define __find_supplements true as there are only the modalias() supplements in the xen package. -- Configure bugmail: http://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
