googling suggests that i'm getting hit by a known problem with older ipw3945
drivers and smp machines.

According to the ieee80211 changelog, the very problems with smp machines and
encrypted wlan were solved in ieee80211 1.2.15 which should be, by all means,
in any 2.6.18 kernel, since it was officially committed. (see
