https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=685691 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=685691#c0 Summary: GNOME3 gnome-shell and ATI fglrx - corrupted activities bar Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.4 Version: Final Platform: i686 OS/Version: openSUSE 11.4 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: GNOME AssignedTo: bnc-team-gnome@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: nmo.marques@gmail.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- Created an attachment (id=423556) --> (http://bugzilla.novell.com/attachment.cgi?id=423556) Xorg.0.log User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:2.0.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/4.0 Upon installing GNOME3 v1.0.0 32bit (openSUSE 11.4 platform) available on GNOME3.org, updating it and installing ATI proprietary driver 11.3 I've noticed the following: 1. Activities bar is corrupted displaying horizontal color bars and and grey icons. The opened application icon is drawn ok. Behavior isn't affected but experience is affected. 2. For all the rest, everything seems to be working fine (including hardware detection). 3. Please consider that it is important to use ATI proprietary driver on laptops mainly for optimal thermal performance. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Download and install i686 GNOME3 (1.0.0) Live from gnome3.org. 2. Update the system through zypper 3. Download and install (RPM for 11.4) ATI fglrx 11.3. 4. Login into GNOME3/gnome-shell. Actual Results: Corrupted activities bar (though I'm not the right person to debug this, but seems related to transparencies). Screenshot does not capture the bar, only the background, so no screenshot. Expected Results: Normal activities bar. display: :0 screen: 0 OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc. OpenGL renderer string: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4500 Series OpenGL version string: 3.3.10600 Compatibility Profile Context // ATI M92 RV710/730 - Radeon Mobility HD4570 -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

To anyone experiencing this problem, it's possible to get a mostly-normal looking panel by installing the Elementary gnome shell theme (http://gnome-shell.deviantart.com/gallery/28081982#/d371nhf). There are still some graphical glitches, but the panel itself displays all right.
You'll get glitches on the icons (which can be removed by opening the gnome-tweak-tool and changing the icon theme, then reverting)... but you will end up with screen tearing after some time of usage... It's not really the theme the main problem, is driver issue with fglrx. What would probably help would be finding the real cause and ask whoever has some contact with ATI/AMD driver team and ask them to fix this. They did fixed and prepared a special release for Unity/Ubuntu... They should equally sensitive to GNOME3, specially when they are a openSUSE sponsor... -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
