[Bug 350421] New: ntfs kernel module busy wait
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=350421 Summary: ntfs kernel module busy wait Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Final Platform: i686 OS/Version: openSUSE 10.3 Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: a23d56@yahoo.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: Customer mount /dev/sda3 /mnt/temp with the default "rw" option, where sda3 is an NTFS windows 2003 server partition causes the system to go 99% busy wait. There is no way to escape, reboot does not repsond. You have to hit the reset button! Mounting read-only works. I am talking abount the NTFS kernel moudule, not the fuse version. If it's not supposed to work in read-write mode, then why allow a mount with the default rw option to lock up the system? linux-ntfs kernelmodule has got some changes so it`s safer
But obviously not safe enough, since it hangs my system. I just wanted to read some files, but I can't even do that, since the default mount is read-write, which causes the hang. I tested the debian unstable 2.6.22 kernel and it has the same bug, so it's an upstream problem. If you disable the kernel NTFS, I won't spend any time on further diagnostics. Just make it so a user can't hang their system, is all I ask. If that means killing the NTFS kernel module in favor of ntfs-3g, that's fine with me. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Just make it so a user can't hang their system, is all I ask. if it would be trivial, we would have an stable r/w in-kernel implementation. go, blame microsoft for that for not open up the specs for ntfs. don`t blame novell. really.
ntfs is damn complex stuff. afaik, the driver is mostly done by reverse engineering. just set mount options to read-only in /etc/fstab and use ntfs-3g if you need write access. ok - maybe it`s not optimal to have r/w mount by default, so novell should really consider changing this. i recommend this and i assume this is what you like to see !? anyway - to know what goes wrong it would be very valuable information for ntfs project and be happy that someone at novell wants to look at this. getting qualified support is scarce - i can tell you stories, man :) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

just set mount options to read-only in /etc/fstab
That's not a solution for me. I mount it by hand, on the command line, only when needed. And I don't want to remember to use -o ro every time. I want the default to work, without hanging my system.
ok - maybe it`s not optimal to have r/w mount by default, so novell should really consider changing this. i recommend this and i assume this is what you like to see !?
NO! r/w mount has been default for so long, it would be insane to change that. Change your kernel config to omit the NTFS kernel module, so users cannot use it. From now on, tell them to use nfts-3g. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

'dmesg' should contain the dump, as will /var/log/messages
I can see it with dmesg, but it's not showing up in /var/log/messages. I tried redirecting the dmesg output to a file, but the system is too messed up to write it to disk. I can only get a short file, about 20k of output, it's nowhere near the entire dmesg output. So I don't know how to get the dump information to you. You said you wanted to disable the kernel module in favor of 3g.
