[Bug 843226] New: x11-video-fglrxG03 needs manual xorg.conf modification
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=843226 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=843226#c0 Summary: x11-video-fglrxG03 needs manual xorg.conf modification Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Factory Version: 13.1 Beta 1 Platform: i586 OS/Version: SLED 11 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: X11 3rd Party Driver AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: EagleScreen@gmail.com QAContact: sndirsch@suse.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux i686; rv:17.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/17.0 I am using SUSE Linux Enterprise 11 SP3, it has an official repository to install ATI-AMD fglrx graphics driver "ATI-Driver-SLE11-SP3" (URL: http://www2.ati.com/suse/sle11sp3) This repository provides two packages for two different driver versions: x11-video-fglrxG03 (12.104-1.2) and x11-video-fglrxG02 (8.790-4.50). I installed the x11-video-fglrxG03 one and after reboot, the fbdev driver was in use instead of fglrx. I had to manually edit /etc/X11/xorg.conf (file created by the installer) and force to load fglrx kernel module and change driver fbdev by fglrx in device section. After doing that and restarting X, the driver fglrx is in use and I finally have a good desktop performance. I see here a bug because I think that the installer scripts of the package should write the right configuration in xorg.conf and user should not has to edit it manually. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Install SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop. 2. Enable "ATI-Driver-SLE11-SP3" repository. 3. Install x11-video-fglrxG03 package. 4. Reboot the system. Actual Results: You will note that fbdev driver is in use instead of fglrx for graphics card, having a really bad desktop performance. Expected Results: After reboot, fglrx driver should be in use for graphics card, having a good desktop performance.
