[Bug 671543] New: KDE and Gnome prevent system from booting
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=671543 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=671543#c0 Summary: KDE and Gnome prevent system from booting Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.4 Version: RC 1 Platform: x86-64 OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Installation AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: bluedzins@wp.pl QAContact: jsrain@novell.com Found By: --- Blocker: --- NOTE: I agree with you, this looks crazy, but I did several tests to eliminate mistake or hardware failure. Initial partitions: I already have my disks partitioned, so while installing I simply import the layout. Which is: /boot -- /dev/sdb (pendrive, USB) / -- /dev/sda (hard disk) /home -- /dev/sda (hard disk) Installation: it is almost default. I select the desktop, import the partitions, set the user ("xxx", password also "xxx", acts as root account), and set such options for booting: * Boot From Boot Partition -- ON * Boot From Master Boot Record -- OFF * Set active flag in Partition Table for Boot Partition -- ON The tests I ran was the same after the same with only difference of chosen desktop, which were: * Gnome * LDXE * Gnome * LDXE * Gnome * LDXE * KDE * XFCE * LDXE In case of LDXE and XFCE -- no problems. In case of KDE and Gnome -- there was problem right at boot stage. The initial booting screen with progress was shown (is it GRUB part, right?), and then there was a long pause and system switches to text mode. There is a message stating the timeout was passed waiting for the pendrive (mind you, booting was done from pendrive so it is impossible to have and not have pendrive at the same time) and with error: drive "/dev/disk/by-id/id_of_my_pendrive" is not found Since the console worked, I logged in, and yes, actually there was not such disk found. Out of curiosity, I pulled it out, and plugged it in back, now it was visible in "dev/disk/...". I hope this make sense for you. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I did 2 more installs: * Gnome * LXDE The results as previously. Having LXDE installed (and working) I did some tests using this install: 1. I run full desktop and checked if /dev/disk/by-id/pendrive... is present --> yes 2. I run the system in runlevel 3 to check if the /dev/disk/by-id/pendrive... is present --> yes 3. running in full desktop mode I installed meta package (pattern) -- Gnome 4. I rebooted computer and... it failed at boot stage exactly as I described in the first post 5. the booting process stops because of fsck -- this is the program which requires the pendrive device a) it is unclear for me why the device is not present with Gnome b) I didn't check if fsck is run w/o Gnome installed 6. when booting failed I try to reset computer (it is a cold reset) -- to my surprise now even BIOS didn't see pendrive and booting was no possible. I had to turn off computer, wait a second, and turn it on again Currently I have LXDE+Gnome installed, I cannot boot up the system (as described) above. Please let me know if I can provide more info. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I forgot 7. I tried to boot the system in failsafe mode with the same result -- booting stopped at fsck check -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
