[Bug 680118] New: Main Internet Applications cannot connect after resume from hibernation or suspend
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=680118 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=680118#c0 Summary: Main Internet Applications cannot connect after resume from hibernation or suspend Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE 11.4 Version: Final Platform: i586 OS/Version: Linux Status: NEW Severity: Critical Priority: P5 - None Component: Network AssignedTo: bnc-team-screening@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: ford_dent@yahoo.co.uk QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: Customer Blocker: --- After resume from hibernation or suspend browsers, email clients and chat etc no longer connect to external web servers. However ping is unaffected... there is no problem to ping external web servers around the globe... This seems to be a new development with 11.4 : previous workarounds for prior versions (11.3, 11.2 etc) using ifdown eth0 and ifup eth0 no longer restore internet connection for the main user internet applications. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Ford,
Please describe your issue more in detail, I don't know where is your issue.
After suspend, could you ping the url? ping www.google.com
However ping is unaffected... there is no problem to ping external web servers around the globe... ----- > There is no problem with ping. I can ping www.google.com
If it's okay, the Network works well, and check what's the status of the nm-applet, it display disconnect or connect? If it's okay, the NetworkManager don't have the issue, and we need to check why the other client can't work.
I don't use Network Manager because in 11.2 and 11.3 I had to switch to Traditional ifup as I will explain below. I have been using Traditional ifup in versions 11.2 and 11.3 because I had this problem using Network Manager. When I suspend in 11.2 or 11.3 I had to stop using Network Manager and use Traditional ifup -- executing ifdown eth0 and ifup eth0 on resume or thaw for internet applications to work. Ping google.com worked ok though. Testing with Network Manager in 11.4 it shows 'Connected' on resume and ping google.com works ok. But internet applications do not work. I therefore expected to have to use Traditional ifup but this no longer solves the problem which it used to solve in 11.2 and 11.3 I hope this clarifies things! -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

As far as I know this is unique to openSUSE and my guess is that it was developed and provided because many users had a similar problem to mine: i.e. that Network Manager did not handle resume/thaw well enough to allow internet applications to connect to internet after resume/thaw. My issue is that now with 11.4 resume/thaw no longer works with Traditional ifup either. Ping www.google.com works fine, however, as I said before. Of course if there was a way to get Network Manager to work properly after resume/thaw that would be ideal. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Did I explain enough the problem. After suspend my internet applications cannot make internet connection, but ping works fine. I used to work around this problem with previous versions using ifup, but now with 11.4 this no longer solves the problem. It would be good to hear from you and hopefully solve the problem otherwise Linux will be useless for me unless I never upgrade from 11.3... Thanks! (In reply to comment #1)

The driver's should be okay, and you don't use the NetworkManager, so it's related to ifup or the applications themselves(firefox, mail client). So first let's make sure which one cause this issue. When you met this issue, how about restart the firefox or the other client? And could view the text page with 'w3m www.google.com'? Restarting Firefox, Thunderbird, Software Update etc has no effect. Viewing a text page with w3m www.google.com impossible after suspend/hibernate in 11.4 Ping www.google.com is OK. (Just to be clear its exactly the same problem if I use Network Manager so I don't agree that the problem is with ifup. I use ifup because in 11.2 and 11.3 I was able to avoid the problem with a workaround. This workaround no longer works in 11.4. .....To put it differently: now ifup has the same problem that Network Manager always had. Now in 11.4 both Network manager and ifup have the same problem whereas before I could avoid it with ifup.. Just want to be absolutely clear on this so hopefully you may be able to solve this!) Thanks! Ford

Ford,
Please attach your route tables before and after resume.
just run 'route -nveeN' before the suspend and after the resume.
Thanks!

Ford, Sorry for late, I met this issue in my office, it works fine in my home, but I can't visit the website in office, and ping is okay, but all of website was resolved one ip address which is my service provider at home. And I don't know why the NM not update it. Just delete it, now it works fine. I thought it's related to you resolv.conf. Could paste it? Or could delete the /etc/resolv.conf then reclick the connection to connect again? I switched to NM and I did delete resolv.conf and experimented with NM. No success. However, although I am not a great expert with TCPIP it did get me thinking that the problem may indeed be related to my router setup as I have a local 4 port NAT router that enables me to share my internet connection if I want 2 computers on the same desk. I don't think you asked me but my setup is as follows: Computer >> Safecom 4-Port Cable/DSL Broadband Router >> HomePlug Powerline ethernet adaptor >> electrical power cabling >> HomePlug Powerline ethernet adaptor >> Netgear Cable Modem DSL Broadband Router >> Internet.... By unplugging ethernet cable from the WAN port of the local Safecom router and plugging it directly into my computer the problem disappears - at least using IFUP. I haven't tested it with NM Network Manager yet as there may be a conflict between sleep/Suspend and Network Manager. For real success ideally I would like: 1) to be able to use Network Manager instead of IFUP (not least because if I need support everyone forgets I am using IFUP!); 2) to be able to use Sleep/Suspend without getting a black screen - which happens when I use Network manager; and 3) to be able to use my local router If using Network manager is too buggy then I will need to know how to use IFUP in different situations e.g. when I am using my laptop to connect via my Wireless card (RaLink chipset works ok) wlan0 instead of by eth0. Hope the above is clear English. I think the hard part is solved and hopefully you may have enough information to be able to help me get Network manager solved or else help me workaround with IFUP. I haven't migrated to 11.4 yet but using suspend via the keyboard seems to work ok. For some reason I am having problems hibernating but that's another problem. On 11.3 with suspend and hibernate using Network Manager in both cases I have to sudo /sbin/rcnetwork restart (or alternatively open and close the Network Settings control panel in Yast) to regain internet connection as Network Manager after resume is unable to see that 'Auto eth0' exists unless I restart rcnetwork. Hope this information helps. 11.4 seems to have improved this but I need to know the cause of the problem that will enable me to use my Safecom router (and also avoid any possible future problems with rcnetwork) Any thoughts? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
