[Bug 230738] New: without any reason, program pdf to text starts, consumes 100 % of CPU all the time, untill killed
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=230738 Summary: without any reason, program pdf to text starts, consumes 100 % of CPU all the time, untill killed Product: openSUSE 10.2 Version: Final Platform: 32bit OS/Version: SuSE Other Status: NEW Keywords: tracking Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Usability AssignedTo: siegfried.olschner@novell.com ReportedBy: jan.sekal@volny.cz QAContact: siegfried.olschner@novell.com hi, to reproduce this bug: 1. perform new installation of suse 10.2 final 2. create a user acount, being also in root group, belonging by default to group "user" 3. start under user - watch performance using ksysguard - you have to kill it two times in a row to kill it, even after that it can start up without you wanting it to do so! to have a notion, what a "blocker" is this bug, I attached 9 screenshots I am worried, that a normal user would definitely not discover it, he would only be the whole time blocked by this shitty program (pdftotext) and he/she would not know why is the computer so desperately slow -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

find|grep beagle|xargs rpm -qp --requires|grep pdf xpdf-tools rpm -qf `which pdftotext` xpdf-tools-3.01-48
:) I am a poor user, these lines seem to me like something i should put into commandline, but I wont try it until i know what it does

i think the result of our interaction should be that this program opens a message box telling what is going on and this message box should disappear first after the work is done.. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

If you do not use beagle (and do not use gnome), the consensus on mailing lists and irc is to uninstall beagle, and every package that requires it. (I am sure that the people the bug is assigned to would still like to see the information they requested -- which will likely show that beagle is indeed the package which is responsible for running pdftotext.) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

the output is jan 5079 0.0 0.1 2852 708 pts/1 R+ 14:56 0:00 grep pdftext
You should of course run this command line when you experience pdftext running, calling it at other times doesn't help. ;-)
i hope it is clear accordingly, that i do not know what "parent process" is
Either run "pstree" in a console or as it seems that you like ksysguard, check the "Tree" checkbox in there and look at the line above the "pdftext" entry. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

ok, thanks, the tree checkbox is a cool tool after that three experiences with pdftotext (and killing it every time) i did not notice it any start up of pdftotext, perhaps supposed beagle gave it up.. it seem like i am a little bit paranoiac and watching ksysguard all the time, but i have a notebook, and 100 % CPU usage is clearly heard, as the fan starts cooling! Jan, I've reassigned the bug and your need-info check was deleted. Should you provide some additional information?
no, I have encountered this problem three times (each time i killed this process using ksysguard) - and after that pdftotext have not started up. I, as a user, would suggest, that if such a CPU demanding system task starts, suse should give me a message like this: "system is now going to eat 100 % CPU for ten minutes" or "system is now going to eat 100 % CPU, depending on your RAM and CPU it can take a longer time - in this time the computer will be less responsive." or something like that. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
