[Bug 864907] New: Consider switching default chess engine to GNU Chess
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=864907 https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=864907#c0 Summary: Consider switching default chess engine to GNU Chess Classification: openSUSE Product: openSUSE Factory Version: 13.2 Milestone 0 Platform: All OS/Version: Other Status: NEW Severity: Enhancement Priority: P5 - None Component: GNOME AssignedTo: bnc-team-gnome@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: mcatanzaro@gnome.org QAContact: qa-bugs@suse.de Found By: --- Blocker: --- User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; Intel Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/538.1 (KHTML, like Gecko) Safari/538.1 Epiphany/3.10.3 openSUSE currently uses Phalanx as the default chess engine for GNOME Chess. I recommend switching to GNU Chess instead. I guess Phalanx is probably used by default because it has traditionally been weaker than GNU Chess and easier to play against, whereas GNU Chess has been comparatively difficult. Unfortunately, Phalanx is still far too difficult for most players, even on the easiest difficulty level. GNU Chess 6 is a complete rewrite that provides many more options for controlling the difficulty than Phalanx or GNU Chess 5. Beginning with GNOME 3.12, GNOME Chess will take advantage of this to make the game much easier on lower difficulty levels. The gnome-games pattern currently Recommends Phalanx and Suggests GNU Chess. Those could probably just be switched. Reproducible: Always Some less-relevant considerations: * GNU Chess is already used by default in Debian, Ubuntu, and Fedora. * GNU Chess is actively maintained. I'm not sure when Phalanx last received a stable release, but it's been at least eight years, and probably more. * openSUSE is the only distro I'm aware of that ships a beta version of Phalanx, so it alone has to deal with bugs introduced since the last stable release. The only time I tested it, last May, I found a serious bug with castling (fixed in openSUSE) that caused GNOME Chess to appear to hang. * I am the upstream maintainer of GNOME Chess. (I'm not associated with GNU Chess.) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
