[Bug 305235] New: express cards/ pci-express hotplug module is not loaded by default
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=305235 Summary: express cards/pci-express hotplug module is not loaded by default Product: openSUSE 10.3 Version: Beta 2 Platform: i386 OS/Version: openSUSE 10.3 Status: NEW Severity: Normal Priority: P5 - None Component: Kernel AssignedTo: kernel-maintainers@forge.provo.novell.com ReportedBy: fseidel@novell.com QAContact: qa@suse.de Found By: --- For hotplugging express cards one needs to have the pci-express hotplug module "pciehp" loaded, but its seemingly not loaded by default on pci-e capable hardware. Is there a special reason, or could we load it by default on pci-e capable hardware? -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

I have Express34 cards, Esata (sata_sil24) and a firewire card that are not hotplugable. You have to manually load pciehp to get the cards seen. But that does not fix the ability to hotplug the cards. Once the card is seen you cannot remove the card and then re-insert it and have it work. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

Also, pci express hotplug doesn't always work the same way as pcmcia did/does, have you enabled the power on these devices after plugging them in (you need to do so using an old gtk+ tool, or by echoing a value to sysfs to enable the power to the slot.) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

The system with the sb400 chips, pciehp will show that it sees cards inserted but will not set them up. The 3rd machine has nvidia mp65 chips, and pciehp will load but does not register any events. What is the 'old gtk+ tool"? On all 3 systems, if the card is in when the system is booted, then the card is usable. Also, if the card is inserted in a running system, scanpci will show that the card is seen on the pci bus. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.

This is the bus the express cards use. The driver does see the card insert/removal but does not set up the card. acpiphp locks on bus 0b. The cards appear on bus 0e. The pciehp driver does not see card insertions, only card removals. If you rmmod pciehp, insert the card, then modprobe pciehp, then pciehp sees the the card, sets it up, and properly removes it when the card is removed. pciehp will not see the next card that is pluged in. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug.
