[Bug 226012] New: Software Management - Unable to create installation source
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=226012 Summary: Software Management - Unable to create installation source Product: SUSE Linux 10.1 Version: Final Platform: i386 OS/Version: SuSE Linux 10.1 Status: NEW Severity: Major Priority: P5 - None Component: Selections AssignedTo: sndirsch@novell.com ReportedBy: alpha096@tpg.com.au QAContact: qa@suse.de (Possible dupe - I did a search but found no bug for this one but it is familiar as a on-line update issue) Software management - "Error Unable to create installation source" see screen shot. This occurs when there is either a load on the LAN or the mirror is under load. In this case the LAN was under load BUT was not reporting any collisions. Please do NOT let an application decide to time out this is the decision for comms after receiving a NOACK or error from the mirror. The application has no place timing out unless comms directs it to! https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=226012 ------- Comment #9 from alpha096@tpg.com.au 2006-12-11 17:59 MST ------- I do not understand why software management should need to interrogate the catalogue of the source distro or mirror. Surely software management needs only to interrogate the local catalogue only. I can now understand why so many many people in the discussion email channels recommend disabling the service and just run online update once per week. Given the amount of time the application takes to load over ADSL I pity the people on dialup who are connected when they open software management. I would recommend to SUSE.de that all developers who sign off on applications be limited to a WAN speed of no more than 512/256 to simulate a typical user environment on development PC's final sign off. This may offset a great deal of problems that emerge after release in respect to all YAST tools that have online dependencies. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.

That means, a more informative error message should be displayed in such situation. I can only change that "Unrecognized error" error code message to specific "Empty reply from server" in MediaCurl.cc, by checking for CURLE_GOT_NOTHING. But that probably doesn't make much sense since the curl message gets out of MediaCurl anyway. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=226012 ------- Comment #12 from jkupec@novell.com 2006-12-20 05:24 MST ------- Reply to #9: I don't quite understand what you mean by "local catalogue". If you mean installation sources on local installation media like CD or DVD, then you're right, and you actually can (AFAIK) stick with these media only. You need to add an online installation source only if you want to get an online update (bugfixes) ASAP, or if you want to install software not found in other inst. sources. If you mean local cache of package metadata from installation sources, you're right as well: the cache gets refreshed and metadata get parsed in places and situations where it should not. This is a known problem and we're working on it. -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=226012 ------- Comment #13 from alpha096@tpg.com.au 2006-12-20 06:22 MST ------- Reply to #12. Yes you assume quite correctly. In the application "Installation Source" this points to various locations of "Media containing software catalogues" Hence I use the same terminology as the product defines as such in installation sources and refer to them as the application does as follows Local = PC HDD/CD/DVD NFS = installation source held on an NFS source YUM = on-line source Merry Christmas ;-) -- Configure bugmail: https://bugzilla.novell.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
